From ‘Black Panther’ to ‘The Whale,’ these 2023 Oscar nominees have ties to CT

Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams announced the 2023 Oscar nominees on Tuesday morning.
Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan’s sci-fi “Everything Everywhere All at Once” secured the most nominations with 11, and Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Edward Berger’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” followed with nine.
The 95th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 12, with Jimmy Kimmel as the host.
Here are nominees with ties to Connecticut:
Angela Bassett
Best Actress in a Supporting Role: “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”

Following her Golden Globe win, Bassett scored a nomination for her performance as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” making history as the first Marvel performer to be nominated for an acting Oscar.
Bassett earned her bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1980 and a master of fine arts degree from the Yale School of Drama in 1983. She received an honorary degree from the university in 2018.
Jamie Lee Curtis

The actress secured her first Oscar nomination for her performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
Curtis attended Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford for her senior year of high school, a move she told Colin Farrell was a “mistake.” She received an alumnae award from the school in 1996.
Brendan Fraser
Best Actor in a Leading Role: “The Whale”

The actor was nominated for his comeback role as Charlie in “The Whale.” The performance earned him his first Academy Award nomination.
Fraser, a New York resident, often visits Greenwich and is a major supporter of Abilis, a nonprofit in lower Fairfield County that helps people with developmental disabilities.
Brian Tyree Henry

The “Atlanta” star earned his master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama, according to IMDB.
Carter Burwell
Best Original Score: “The Banshees of Inisherin”

Burwell composed the Oscar-nominated score for “The Banshees of Inisherin.”
The composer graduated from King School, a private K-12 school in Stamford, according to the alumni association.
Frances McDormand

Sara Dosa

Sara Dosa directed the nominee “Fire of Love,” a documentary film that centers around two volcanologists.
The director graduated from Wesleyan University in 2005, where she studied Anthropology and Sociology.
Abby Weiss is a Connecticut native and a features reporter at Hearst Connecticut Media. She graduated with a B.S. in journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 2022. She has written for InsideClimate News, The New York Post and Callaway Climate Insights.
