The freeze is on the price you pay for the power you use, so consuming less will help to keep a lid on your bills.

The kitchen is home to many of the worst energy-guzzling appliances – but making smart switches can bring real savings.

Harriet Cooke crunches the numbers – based on the new unit prices of gas and leccy from October – and serves up the cheapest ways to make your fave meals.

Spag bol – Slow cooker v hob

AFTER frying your mince and veg until soft, which takes about ten minutes, you then have a choice of placing it either in a slow cooker or a saucepan to cook in tomato sauce.

In a slow cooker, the process can take up to eight hours, costing 27.2p.

Using the gas hob is cheaper by 20.5p, or £10.66 if you made this meal every week for a year

Tips

WHEN using water to boil anything in a pan, only use as much water as is needed to cover the food you are cooking.

  • Cook as much as possible in the oven in one go, so all the space and heat is used. Keep the oven door closed while cooking to avoid losing heat. Use glass or ceramic dishes as they retain heat better than metal ones.
  • Defrost frozen food in the fridge overnight or while you’re at work.
  • When cooking potatoes, boil them in a pan before roasting them to reduce the oven cooking time.
