Fright Night Documentary Available to Watch on SCREAMBOX

Fright Night #FrightNight

It’s a good time to be a Fright Night fan. Not only has original writer/director Tom Holland recently come out with a novelization expanding upon the events of the first movie, but a documentary on the franchise’s first two movie installments has been released, titled You’re So Cool, Brewster! The Making of Fright Night.

“An extensive look at the making of Fright Night (1985) and Fright Night Part 2 (1988) featuring exclusive interviews with cast and crew members, rare photographs, behind-the-scenes footage and more.”

The docuseries is produced by Holland, who also directed Child’s Play and wrote Psycho II (1983), and has been split into two parts. The first part covers the making of the original and includes behind-the-scenes footage, rare photographs, images from Holland’s personal archives, and more. Among the cast members spoken to were Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Stephen Geofferys, and Amanda Bearse.

The second part will focus on the sequel, which has streamed nowhere else before and give viewers the same type of insider info as the previous episode. Tommy Lee Wallace, who directed Fright Night Part 2 in addition to Halloween III: Season of the Witch and It (1990), was interviewed. Cast members from the sequel who were also spoken to were Julie Carmen, Brian Thompson, Jon Gries, and Josh Richman.

One cast member from both films that they were sadly unable to talk to was Roddy McDowell, who passed away in 1998. He played late-night horror host Peter Vincent, The Great Vampire Killer, who teenager Charley Brewster (Ragsdale) goes to for help when he discovers that his next-door neighbor (Sarandon) is a vampire. Alongside all the insight into the films, the documentary also serves as a tribute to McDowell.

“The story came when I said, well, the horror fan, the teenager, what’s he gonna do? If he believes that the next-door neighbor is a vampire because everybody’s gonna think he’s mad. Well, of course, he goes to Vincent Price. And the minute that I had the Roddy McDowall character, I had the story,” said Holland in an interview with Shock Till You Drop

Besides Holland and Wallace, among the crew members talked to for the series was Brad Fiedel. Besides providing the score for both films, Fiedel is also the man who came up with the iconic Terminator theme music. Richard Edlund, who provided the visual effects for both Fright Night and also worked on Ghostbusters (1984), was also interviewed.

You’re So Cool Brewster! was brought to us from the same team that brought horror fans Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser & Hellbound: Hellraiser II. This documentary was able to through the efforts of fans online. Thanks to 313 backers, the Kickstarter campaign for You’re So Cool Brewster! raised £14,832 out of its £10,000 goal.

It’s exclusively available to watch on the horror streaming platform SCREAMBOX. A subscription of $4.99 a month is required if you wish to watch the documentary. Three-month and year-long subscriptions are available at SCREAMBOX as well. Whether the documentary series will extend to cover the other two films made, Fright Night (2011) and Fright Night 2: New Blood, remains to be seen.
