Free multicultural event on Saturday, May 21: St. George Theatre presents free pop-up event celebrating music and dance

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Looking for a fabulous way to spend your Saturday? On Saturday, May 21, the St. George Theatre will present a free pop-up event celebrating music and dance from around the world in the theatre’s newly renovated Grand Lobby.

The initiative is supported, in part, by public funds from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, City Council, and in partnership with the Center for Traditional Dance and Music’s Beat of the Boroughs NYC.

Entitled “1,2,3,4! A Celebration of Music & Dance from Around the World” this free event takes place from 1-4 p.m. and will feature performers from Africa, Mexico and Sri Lanka sharing their cultures with the Staten Island community.

“Through Council-member David Carr’s office in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs’ Cultural Immigrant Initiative, we are thrilled to once again proudly present this enriching program highlighting the diversity of talent and culture that spans across our city,” says Doreen P. Cugno, President and CEO of the nonprofit theatre.

Schedule of Events:

1 p.m-1:40 p.m.

“Mariachi Real de Mexico”

Traditional Mexican music and dance presentation by Martha Zarate and Ramon Ponce of Mariachi Real de Mexico featuring acoustic guitars, violin and beautiful vocal harmonies.

2-2:40 p.m.

“Jomion and the Uklos”

Three blood-brothers from the coastal West African city of Cotonou blend reggae, salsa and jazz with Caribbean styles while drawing on their vast knowledge of traditional vodun (voodoo) music and culture to create vibrant, relaxed dance music.

3-3:40 p.m.

“Sri Lankan Dance Academy of New York”

The Sri Lankan Dance Academy of New York will present authentic examples of the Sri Lankan art form of Kandyan dance with elaborate clothing and accessories.

Later that evening, Staten Island native Candice Guardino will present her original one-woman-show Italian Bred on the theatre’s main stage celebrating her Italian American upbringing at 8 p.m. Tickets for this theatrical comedy range from $19-$59 and can be purchased at the following link: https://stgeorgetheatre.com/italian-bred/
