A Foreign Office minister is expected to quit today over government plans to slash the foreign aid target from 0.7 per cent to 0.5 per cent of GDP.
Rishi Sunak the chancellor, will use his spending review today to announce a temporary cut in foreign aid to help restore Britain’s coronavirus-ravaged economy.
Baroness Sugg, a junior minister at the Foreign Office, has long championed the 0.7 per cent target and is said to be strongly opposed to the move. Government sources said that the baroness, who previously served as David Cameron’s head of operations at No 10, is expected to quit. She declined to comment.
Mr Cameron, who has publicly opposed the plans to cut the target, is expected to make an intervention this afternoon.
