Football: Harper leads as Paramus Catholic upsets No. 5 Seton Hall Prep

Kievon Harper had two rushing touchdowns as Paramus Catholic upset fifth-ranked Seton Hall Prep 20-17 at Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field in West Orange.

Paramus Catholic (2-4) took a 7-0 lead when they took the opening kickoff and drove 60 in 10 plays with Harper running it in from the five-yard line. Michael Sorrentino got the extra point, making it 7-0 with 8:31 left in the first quarter.

After a punt from Seton Hall Prep (4-2), Paramus Catholic drove 47 yards in 10 plays with Sorrentino adding a 31-yard field goal, making it 10-0 with 2:14 left in the 1st quarter.

Seton Hall Prep took the ensuing kickoff and drove 59 yards in 11 plays with Jack Catchpole Jr. kicking a 26-yard field goal, cutting the Paramus Catholic lead to 10-3 with 10:23 left in the second quarter.

Paramus Catholic took the kickoff and drove 80 yards in 8 plays and Harper scored again from the one-yard line with Sorrentino adding the extra point for a 17-3 lead.

Seton Hall Prep took the next kickoff and drove 62 yards in six plays with Jaylen McClain running it in from the two-yard line and Catchpole adding the extra point to make the score 17-10.

Sorrentino added a 21-yard field goal with 47 seconds left in the second quarter to make the score 20-10. On their second possession of the third quarter, Seton Hall Prep drove 57 yards in 10 plays with Michael Dunmore scoring from 23 yards and Catchpole adding the extra point to make the score 20-17 with 4:10 left in the quarter.

“We’ve had a ton of games like this all year where we needed one more play to win,” said Paramus Catholic coach Greg Russo. “Today, we made the one play we needed and beat a very good, well-coached team.”

“I’m proud of the kids for hanging with it,” Russo added. “We had a great week of practice, turned out the distractions and finished the game.”
