First graders wish retirees a socially distanced happy Hanukkah

McGillis School first grade students wave and wish residents at Friendship Manor a happy Hanukkah and season’s greetings from the sidewalks surrounding the senior apartment building in Salt Lake City on Thursday. Residents were enjoying a Hanukkah luncheon in their rooms and could look out their apartment windows to see the children below. Before the pandemic, McGillis first grade students and the retired residents would spend afternoons reading picture books together and talking. This year, the new first graders have not been able to visit, so they are writing and decorating 170 holiday cards for the residents. In the cards the students introduce themselves and share a fact about themselves, such as their age or favorite activity, and a wish they have for the recipient.
