First Alert Weather: Lingering showers Wednesday morning

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Good morning and happy Wednesday!

We continue to monitor a surface low that’s moving through central Alabama this morning. The slow movement of this low will allow us to see rain during the morning hours.

First Alert AccuTrack Satellite and Radar is showing us cloudy with scattered showers. I can’t rule out pockets of heavy rain as this low slowly moves to the east. Rain chances remain elevated at 50% mainly for areas along and east of Interstate 65 this morning. I recommend grabbing a rain jacket and an umbrella if you plan to be out before noon. Temperatures this morning remain very warm for early March with most of us in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Patchy fog can’t be ruled out this morning, but I don’t expect widespread issues.

Hourly Forecast Today(WBRC)

We are forecasting a mostly cloudy sky today with possible rain chances before noon. We will likely end up mostly dry this afternoon with the chance to see clouds slowly decrease. We are looking at a partly sunny to mostly cloudy sky later today with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Winds will come from the northwest today at five to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph. A few sprinkles can’t be ruled out this afternoon as dry air moves in. If you have any evening plans, we will likely remain dry with a partly to mostly cloudy sky. Temperatures are forecast to cool into the lower 60s by 7 p.m.

Dry and warm Thursday: We will likely wake up tomorrow morning partly to mostly cloudy with temperatures in the lower 50s. Parts of north Alabama could briefly cool into the upper 40s. Patchy dense fog can’t be ruled out tomorrow so use caution if you plan to be on the roads before 9 a.m.

Bus Stop Forecast Tomorrow(WBRC)

Tomorrow will end up dry with a partly cloudy sky. Temperatures are forecast to warm into the mid 70s tomorrow afternoon. We will likely end up 10 degrees above average for this time of the year. It’ll be a great day to take care of the yard or to eat outside for lunch/dinner.

Next Big Thing: Our next chance to see heavy rainfall and thunderstorms will likely occur Friday afternoon and continue through Saturday morning. We’ll likely wake up Friday morning mostly dry with temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. Friday morning should remain dry, but showers and storms in Mississippi will likely move into central Alabama Friday afternoon. Rain and storms will become likely and widespread by Friday evening and Friday night.

Future Radar – Fri. 4PM(WBRC)

We are forecasting a cloudy sky Friday with highs in the lower 70s. The main threat for us Friday is heavy rainfall and the potential to see isolated flooding. The big question that remains unanswered is determining where the heaviest rain will set up across Alabama Friday night. We still believe the heaviest rainfall totals will remain in the southern half of the state.

Rainfall totals could add up to two to three inches with four to five inches possible in the southern half of the state. Remember to never drive through flooded areas. Turn around, don’t drown!

Severe Potential Friday night into Saturday morning: The latest outlook from the Storm Prediction Center highlights a marginal risk – threat level one out of five – for most of central Alabama. A slight risk – threat level two out of five – has been issued for parts of south Alabama.

First Alert Impacts Friday(WBRC)

I still think the greatest severe threat will remain to our south, but we can’t rule out an isolated strong storm capable of producing strong winds. The tornado threat for our area remains very low, but not zero. The areas to watch will mainly occur south of Interstate 20 including Sumter, Greene, Hale, Bibb, Chilton, and Coosa counties. We will monitor the severe potential, but I still think heavy rain and flooding will be our primary concern Friday night into early Saturday morning.

Weekend Forecast: We will likely see lingering showers across central Alabama Saturday morning. Temperatures are forecast to start out in the upper 50s with a cloudy sky. Rain should move out of our area by Saturday afternoon with a mostly cloudy to partly sunny sky. Temperatures are forecast to warm near 70. Winds will likely increase to 10 to 20 mph Saturday afternoon as drier air filters into the state. If you have any Saturday evening plans, I recommend grabbing a jacket. Temperatures will likely cool into the 50s Saturday evening.

Weekend Outlook(WBRC)

Sunday morning will end up cooler with temperatures in the low to mid 40s. Sunday will end up dry with a partly cloudy sky. Temperatures will end up cooler with highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s. We could see morning temperatures drop into the upper 30s next Monday and Tuesday morning. Most of next week is shaping up to be dry with highs in the 60s and 70s.
