Fire breaks out at Hobart furniture store

Hobart Fire investigators are looking into a fire that took out a retail spot late Tuesday night.

The fire broke out shortly before midnight at Furniture and Mattress Outlet, 1111 E. 37th Ave., Assistant Fire Chief John Reitz said Wednesday. Firefighters arriving on-scene first found the blaze pouring through the roof, he said.

Adjacent businesses escaped structural damage from the fire but do have some water and smoke damage, Reitz said, nor was anyone injured.

Reitz said the Lake Station, New Chicago, Portage, Gary, Merrillville and Union Township Fire Departments; and the Hobart and New Chicago Police Departments and Lake and Porter County 911 dispatch departments assisted.
