Fire at Morton Grove Post Office burns trucks, property; appears it was ‘intentionally set,’ police say

Morton Grove police reported that a fire at the Morton Grove Post Office in the wee hours of Sunday morning damaged trucks and property, but appeared, at this time, to spare the mail.
The Morton Grove police and fire departments responded to the fire at 3:20 a.m. Sunday, and the fire department put out the blaze at the U.S. Post Office in the village, at 9114 Waukegan Road, according to a police department news release.

The fire appears to have been intentionally set, according to the release.
Morton Grove Police Commander Dennis Johnson said the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is conducting an investigation; the news release said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal would also participate and Morton Grove police would assist.

Several trucks and other Post Office property were damaged in the blaze, which took place at the rear of the building, though the news release indicated that as of Sunday, no mail appears to have been damaged or stolen.
Morton Grove police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the United States Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455.
