Antiques Roadshow: Fiona Bruce on new series

Fiona Bruce has been at the helm of the Antiques Roadshow for many years now and has seen guests left disappointed and excited by the valuations they are given. However, for the first time, the presenter was left in tears as she heard expert Will Farmer speak about his mum on the show.

Speaking on The One Show on Monday, Fiona recalled: “This series was the first time an expert had me in tears.

“It was Will Farmer talking about his mum who I had met but also people bring things along because they wanted answers to their questions about an object.

“A man brought along a watch that had belonged to his father. He sounded like an incredible guy and sort of search and rescue missions.

“He brought along this submariner Rolex watch and by the end of it there was not a dry in the house.”

The valuation mentioned by Fiona happened in an episode of Antiques Roadshow earlier this year when Richard Price detailed how special a guest’s Rolex was.

He said of the watch: “No date, the reference 5513, an iconic watch and just before I ask you any questions, I’m going to tell you the reason why this thing became iconic.

“In the 1950s, it was developed and by the 1960s, Sean Connery wore an earlier example in the first Bond movie, Doctor No.”

The guest told Richard that his father was a search and rescue diver with the Royal Navy and always wore his Rolex watch.

Looking at the watch, the expert noted: “This is the original strap. In here, it says the 7206, we’re getting slightly technical with that but it’s the original strap for this watch.

“You’re so lucky to have kept that because normally, most jewellers would have thrown it away, so it’s obviously had a replacement strap

“We’re in an era now where these sort of Rolex’s are just sky-rocketing [in value], particularly with the provenance.”

Richard went on to reveal the watch would now be worth £50,000-£60,000, which left the guest so surprised they broke down in tears.

Sadly when Fiona took her childhood dolls into the show to be valued, she didn’t have the same experience.

The presenter had her head in her hands as she told The One Show host Alex Jones: “This was the first year I had done it and in a moment of complete over excitement and the editor didn’t think this was a too bad idea either, I brought along these dolls.

“My dad who travelled a lot when I was a child, brought back from every country he visited.

“I mean, a lot of little girls had these dolls, the Spanish doll in the flamenco outfit and various other things.

“Anyway, I loved these and the editor said, ‘Why don’t you bring them along?’

“So I got them out of the attic and packed them in front of Hilary Kay, our specialist. This was the first time I had seen them in about 20 years so was cooing over them like, ‘Ooh look!’

“Hilary bless her was actually horrified at these totally valueless things you know.

“So I think maybe a tenner for one, it was totally horrendous.”

Antiques Roadshow airs Sunday on BBC One at 8pm.
