FIA Approves Andretti Global’s Formula 1 Bid

The FIA announced Monday it’s officially approved Andretti Global’s Cadillac-backed Formula 1 expansion bid. Next, the team’s bid to join the F1 grid will go to Formula 1 management for “commercial discussions” that will ultimately decide whether or not a new American team joins the championship.

According to an official announcement from the FIA that reflects rumors first reported last month, the Andretti Global bid was the only one of four applications that passed the second phase of FIA approval and received a referral to Formula 1 itself to finalize a potential spot on the grid. The announcement means that applications from Hitech, Carlin, and LKYSUNZ were not approved by the FIA, likely ending their pushes to join F1.

Andretti Global’s fight is far from done, as any decision involving Formula 1’s commercial interests may come down to whether or not existing teams feel they will able to make money off adding another team. For the past year, team executives like Mercedes boss Toto Wolff have questioned whether or not Andretti Global will add value to the grid. While F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has mirrored those concerns in previous statements, he also added that expansion is “the duty of the FIA and [F1] together,” suggesting that the FIA’s endorsement of Andretti could also help with its chances with F1 itself.

If accepted, Andretti Global is expected to join the series in 2026. The IndyCar, Formula E, IMSA, Indy NXT, and Extreme E team has already announced that General Motors will be a partner in the proposed F1 program through its Cadillac brand.
