Push Up for Mental Health

Get ready to push yourself for a great cause. The Push-Up Challenge is back from June 1st to June 23rd, urging Aussies to tackle mental health and suicide prevention while making a positive impact on the lives of fellow Australians. During these 23 days, participants will conquer a total of 3,144 push-ups, symbolising the lives lost to suicide in Australia last year. It’s disheartening to acknowledge that we lose over 6 men to suicide every day in our country, with men constituting approximately 75% of all national suicides.

By joining initiatives like The Push-Up Challenge, we can raise crucial funds for Movember, enabling them to deliver life-saving mental health and suicide prevention programs that revolutionise the way we support and treat men in need. Let’s make a difference when it matters most by connecting with one another, getting fit, and learning about mental health through this enjoyable event.

The Challenge was initially started in 2016 by Nick Hudson in Perth as a friendly competition between four friends and has now evolved into Australia’s largest mental health and fitness event. To participate, simply complete the 3,144 push-ups throughout June and consider raising funds for Lifeline, Movember, and The Push For Better Foundation. Don’t miss out on this free event running from June 1st to June 23rd, 2023. To learn more and register, visit The Push-Up Challenge website.

Summer Ends, Sun Protection Shouldn’t

Adore Beauty and Skin Smart Australia are joining forces to offer free skin cancer checks and sunscreens at the mobile ‘SPF365’ skin clinic on May 29th at Bondi Pavilion from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. The clinic will then travel to Terrigal on May 30th, Newcastle on May 31st, Coffs Harbour on June 1st, and Ballina Shire on June 2nd. It’s time to raise awareness that wearing sunscreen is a year-round necessity in Australia, where the UV index remains high even during winter. A recent survey revealed that only 57% of people wear sunscreen daily, despite Adore Beauty’s sales data showing a doubling of sunscreen purchases before summer. Join the movement, prioritize your skin’s health, and drop by the ‘SPF365’ skin clinic for a free check and sun protection.

Surf Legend Layne Beachley Teams Up with WWF-Australia to Help Wildlife on the Great Barrier Reef

A groundbreaking report commissioned by WWF-Australia, co-authored by Professor Hugh Possingham, former chief scientist of Queensland, highlights the remarkable success of Queensland’s net-free zones since the removal of commercial gill nets in 2015. These zones have become thriving havens for marine life, including over 1,600 fish species and iconic creatures like turtles and dolphins, within the magnificent Great Barrier Reef.

Lending her support to this crucial cause, former Australian pro surfer Layne Beachley, a WWF-Australia Partner, is actively driving conversations and education to protect our world’s precious natural resources. Beachley emphasizes the uniqueness of the Reef to Australia and the opportunity we have to shape a better future. “When the Reef thrives, so do we,” she states.

To engage with the public on these critical issues, Beachley has created “Chats for Change,” a bite-sized video content series where she poses questions about the environment, nature, and climate, answered by a crew of experts. In one of the episodes, Beachley discusses the ocean’s transformation since her early surfing days and explores the profound benefits a Net-Free Reef can bring to the communities above and below the water’s surface.

To learn more about the initiative and take action to protect this natural wonder, head to the WWF website.  Don’t miss out on watching “Chats for Change” on WWF-Australia’s social media channels (@wwf_australia) to gain valuable insights and contribute to preserving the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.
