Family and friends confirmed the teen killed was 16-year-old Bailey Veitch. Court documents said Veitch was walking home after stopping at Dairy Queen and was hit outside Geibel Catholic High School. Police said the driver took off, but neighbors rushed out of their homes to help Veitch. She later died at the hospital.
Surveillance video from the school and nearby homes helped police identify the vehicle. A short time later, police said they were able to locate the driver at a gas station a few miles away. Police said the vehicle had significant damage, and ice cream was found on multiple parts of the truck.
Mark Lucic, 42, is being held in the Fayette County jail. Court documents indicate Lucic is from Canada, and he allegedly told troopers he was staying a Seven Springs as part of a business trip. Police said Lucic blamed his GPS for taking him in the wrong direction.
Veitch was a sophomore in the Connellsville Area School District. Officials said counselors will be made available to staff. A GoFundMe has been started to help cover funeral costs.
