FOOTBALL fans have demanded that the Premier League change the rules around head injuries.

Club doctors checked over Maguire twice for an apparent concussion following a clash of heads early on in the game.

But after doing their due diligence the Man Utd centre-back was allowed to carry on and stayed on the pitch.

In fact it was referee John Brooks that pulled the England international aside at one point in the second half to ensure he was double checked.

And fans are concerned that football’s rules around concussions and head injuries are not strong enough.

With many of them asking for Maguire to be subbed off for his own safety despite the medical staff deeming him fit to play.

On social media one fan wrote: “Twice the game has been stopped over concerns of a head injury to Maguire. He should not be on the field.”

While another added: “Harry Maguire has been heroic in this game but doesn’t take away the fact that he probably should have come off right after the head collision in the first half. One of these days, the Premier League will take concussions seriously.

A third chimed in writing: “The fact that Maguire is still on the pitch is disgusting. He should be MADE to leave the pitch regardless. It’s evident he is concussed. This is where football is so far behind.”

Current guidelines in the Premier League allow club doctors to assess their player’s injury and decide if they are fit to play or not.

But any player with a suspected concussion must be removed from the pitch and not allowed to return until appropriate treatment has been administered.

Other sports such as rugby take different approaches which many fans tend to think treat the potential injuries with more care.

However the Premier League did introduce concussion substitutions in 2021 which allows teams to take off a player they suspect to be concussed without using up one of their designated substitution slots.

Maguire remained on the pitch for Man Utd despite his multiple checks and completed the full 90 minutes for Erik ten Hag’s side.

And he was vital in securing a clean sheet that allowed a late winner from Bruno Fernandes to see the game end in a 1-0 victory for the Red Devils.
