Fans were left in awe of Karim Benzema’s stunning touch before scoring France’s equalising goal against Switzerland, but his effort were in vain as his side crashed out of Euro 2020.
France were trailing 1-0 at half-time thanks to Haris Seferovic’s header and conceded a penalty in the 54th minute when Benjamin Pavard brought down Steven Zuber. But Hugo Lloris saved the spot-kick from Ricardo Rodriguez and Benzema went up the other end to level a minute later.
The striker was played in by Kylian Mbappe, but his pass was slightly behind his team-mate. However, Benzema managed to reach back to drag the ball in front of him before chipping it over the on-rushing Yann Sommer.
Supporters compared the Frenchman’s touch to Dennis Bergkamp’s iconic goal against Newcastle in 2002.
Former England striker Michael Owen tweeted: ‘I’m putting it out there. That @Benzema touch was better than Bergkamp’s v Newcastle all those years ago.’
One fan wrote read: ‘Benzema touch for his goal is up there with the famous Bergkamp one at Newcastle.’

Benzema then went on to score another two minutes later as France turned the game around to lead 2-1.
But Switzerland stunned the world champions with two goals in the final five minutes to take the match to extra-time.
First, Seferovic got his second with another header before Mario Garvranovic struck in the 90th minute.
After a goalles 30 minutes, penalties ensued and it was Switzerland who prevailed, with Kylian Mbappe missing the only spot-kick of the shoot-out.
France had lost Benzema to injury in extra-time with Olivier Giroud replacing him. Giroud scored his penalty but Les Bleus undoubtedly missed not being able to call on Benzema.
Switzerland will now play Spain in the quarter-final after knocking out the favourites.
