England cricket fans were all left fuming after seeing Joe Root drop Rohit Sharma early on day one.

India reached 326-5 at the close of play on day one, and that was partly down to Root’s poor drop.

Sharma went on to score a century as he and Ravindra Jadeja put on over 200 to put the hosts in a commanding position after they won the toss but found themselves 33-3 after an excellent start from England.

Despite the drop, it was still a good day for Ben Stokes and co, but it should have been better, had Root not dropped Sharma on 27 or England failed to review an lbw [leg before wicket] when he was on 87.

And fans’ fears over a huge score from the India opener proved to be correct.

One fan wrote on X: “Joe Root will be in agony with every one of these runs. Rohit fully capable of making us pay.”

And another posted: “Joe Root lost the series …dropped Rohit Sharma.”

This fan wrote: “That Joe Root drop catch could be the game India would have been 47-4 AND with just 2 debutants And Bowlers to come…… England would have been well on top BUT Now India are cruising along.”

England made a fantastic start as Mark Wood managed to make the double centurion from the last Test, Yashavi Jaiswal, nick off to Root at first slip.

Shubman Gill lasted just nine balls before he edged one behind to Ben Foakes, who made no mistake.

Tom Hartley then managed to make Rajat Patidar loop one up into the air for Ben Duckett to catch.

But India should have been four down as Sharma tried to slog-sweep Hartley to the fence, but he chipped it to Root, who was too wide.

The Yorkshireman threw himself at the ball, but it clipped his fingers and ran away.

Sharma scored 131 before he chipped a Wood deliver straight to Stokes, so Root’s drop cost England over 100 runs.
