A massive crowd gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Center to demand justice for Jamel Floyd, who died at the prison after being pepper-sprayed a year ago on Thursday.
Floyd’s family tells News 12 they witnessed the video of his death. They say through their attorneys they were able to watch it and that the video has been under wraps for an entire year.
Jamel Floyd was set to be up for parole, and his family says they were waiting for him to come home to walk his mother down the aisle.
At the time, the Bureau of Prisons says Floyd became increasingly disruptive and potentially harmful to himself and others. Pepper spray was deployed, and staff removed him from his cell, according to the BOP.
News 12 asked the BOP for an updated statement and has not heard back yet.
There is still an ongoing investigation by the Department of Justice. News 12 reached out to see if there are any updates, but the department has previously said it would not give any further info until the investigation is completed.
