Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has revealed that he “wasn’t so worried” about Manchester City striker Erling Haaland ahead of their 1-0 victory over Pep Guardiola’s side due to the trust he has in his teammates.

City lost their first Premier League match of the season on the weekend, as a second-half Mohamed Salah goal sealed the points for Liverpool. The game was somewhat overshadowed by a variety of controversial refereeing decisions and VAR interventions, one of which denied the Blues the opening goal.

Phil Foden thought he had given Guardiola’s side the lead in the 53rd minute, and despite Anthony Taylor allowing the goal to initially stand, a VAR referral saw the match official summoned to the monitor before eventually ruling the strike out owing to a foul from Haaland on Fabinho in the build-up.

The Norwegian has already scored 15 goals in the Premier League this season, the same number that saw Kevin de Bruyne finish as City’s top goalscorer in the league last term, yet Fabinho has revealed that he wasn’t concerned about the 22-year-old ahead of kick-off.

The Liverpool midfielder told ESPN (via Goal): “I think that, in my case, I wasn’t so worried about him because I already had Bernardo [Silva], [Ilkay] Gundogan and Foden on my side. I was trying to close the spaces between the lines, then they do the movements very well, so they pass on the back of the full-backs very well.

“We were working well on the right side with [James] Milner, Joe Gomez, so communication and also understanding with the other players is very important, and I think it worked very well. Then the two defenders played an excellent game, they managed to close Haaland’s spaces well.

“Of course, a player of that quality will always be able to have space, create chances, which is what happened, but Alisson was also very secure, so I’m happy to have managed to close the spaces of a team as good as City.”
