Expert: This may be real reason James Milner escaped punishment as Liverpool footage analysed
Milner #Milner
Kevin Campbell has suggested Liverpool midfielder James Milner avoided conceding a penalty against Everton because of a lack of appeals.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Toffees striker said “penalties have been given” for similar incidents in the past.
Dwight McNeil’s shot was excellently saved by Alisson in the second half of the goalless draw between Everton and Liverpool on Saturday (3 September).
As shown by replays on Twitter (3 September), McNeil’s shot appeared to deflect off Milner’s arm.
The incident was not spotted by referee Anthony Taylor nor VAR official Darren England.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the second-half incident, Campbell said: “Normally, the VAR official stops the game to check if there has been a potential handball.
“They did not even do that. It appears to have been completely missed by the officials.
“We have seen penalties given for stuff like that. Why wasn’t that looked at?
“I’m not going to hold anyones feet to the fire because that went unnoticed though. If they’d seen it, checked and not given it I’d be more annoyed. The game had such a good ebb and flow it went unnoticed.
“Will Evertonians feel aggrieved it was not looked at? Of course they will. Liverpool fans would want that to be looked at if it was the other way round.
“There was no appeals from the fans either really, maybe that’s why it went under the radar.”
In other news, Kieran Maguire has claimed Liverpool could cash in from new deal ‘very soon’ after a £428million U-turn.
