Expert shares Anthony Martial claim pre-Liverpool after early team news

Noel Whelan has backed Anthony Martial to show a “reaction” from the Man United bench against Liverpool on Monday (22 August) after his injury return.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 26-year-old “deserves a chance” after his form in pre-season.
Speaking to club media (19 August), Erik ten Hag revealed Martial has returned to training after missing the first two games of the season with a hamstring injury.
The France international was in fine form during pre-season, scoring three goals in five starts during warm-up games.
Man United have scored once in two Premier League losses thus far this season and sit 19th in the table.
Monday’s game against fierce rivals Liverpool, also winless, is set against a backdrop of fan protests against the ownership of the Glazer family.
Whelan suggested the intensity of the game may mean Ten Hag selects Martial as a substitute.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “He deserves a chance, but whether he’ll get it coming off the back of that injury is another matter.
“I think you’ve got to be careful with players coming back from injury instead of throwing them into the side.
“Especially with the intensity you’re going to get from what is a derby game against Liverpool.
“I think the best he’ll get is a spot on the bench – and he’ll then have to come on and show a reaction when he gets that opportunity.
“Ten Hag has had a lot to speak to the players about. I’m sure the players have spoken to each other and said a few home truths as well.
“This is a massive game for Man United.”
