Expect sushi, sashimi and Wagyu beef at a new Japanese restaurant in south Charlotte

Miku, a restaurant bringing a creative take on traditional Japanese cuisine, opens Tuesday, April 11, in South Charlotte.

Look for a focus on omakase sushi, nigiri and sashimi selections at the restaurant, which offers a patio space in addition to full-service dining and a full bar. (The omakase concept — which is commonplace in Japan but is just recently making its way to Charlotte at restaurants such as Prime Fish and Hestia Rooftop — puts the chef in charge of choosing your meal. It means, “I leave it up to you.”)

There are six omakase choices, paired with miso soup and a house salad — with options to upgrade to premium nigiri and sashimi. You can dip your toe in the waters with the Omakasi Nigiri ($27) with seven pieces of nigiri and your choice of a Spicy Tuna or California Roll. Or you can go all the way with the Ultimate Omakase ($110), which includes 12 pieces of nigiri and 18 pieces of sashimi, plus a Miku Roll, Crunchy Crab Roll and Fountain Roll.

Miku is co-owned by Thomas Seo of Somi Sushi — with one location in Matthews and another on the way uptown in the Duke Energy Plaza — restaurant industry veteran Gineu Kim and Elton Pong, who owns The One Tapas.

While the concepts are similar to what you’ll find at Seo’s Somi Sushi restaurant, Miku will be “a little more high end,” he told CharlotteFive. He’s particularly proud of the wide variety of sushi offerings, featuring fish flown in daily from Japan, along with other upscale selections such as A5 Wagyu beef. Seo is also looking into a caviar dish for the future.

Other Japanese specialties to try include a variety of ramen ($12-15), complete with add-on toppings such as Shoyu egg, menma, mushroom, tempura flakes and more. The menu also includes pork and chicken katsu ($15), and katsucurry ($18), with pork, chicken and shrimp options.

Takeout with online ordering will be available.
