Exclusive: Nigel Martyn compares Pickford’s temperament with Meslier’s
Meslier #Meslier
Former England international Nigel Martyn knows what it takes to be a successful goalkeeper at both Leeds United and Everton.
The men currently between the sticks at both Elland Road and Goodison Park have been in the headlines this season.
Illan Meslier has impressed during his maiden campaign in the Premier League, while questions have persisted about Jordan Pickford’s form.
Despite the fact that Meslier, 20, is the younger man by six years, Martyn told us during an exclusive interview he wishes Pickford could be a bit more like his Leeds opposite number.

“I’ve been really impressed with the amount of saves (Meslier)’s made and his temperament,” said Martyn. “It’s absolutely perfect.
“I’d like to see his temperament on Jordan sometimes! Just really calm, doesn’t get too excited about stuff.”
Pickford has endured a tricky 2020 but it has been a very different story for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Martyn said there’s a case for him being Everton’s most improved player of the past year.
That improvement started under Duncan Ferguson’s brief management and has continued under Carlo Ancelotti.

“He has got better. That lone striker’s role is a hard shift and he has the perfect physical shape for it. He can run, win headers, holds the ball up well, runs the channels and this season he’s added the goals.
“That’s what makes the complete striker. You have to do that three or four seasons in a row to be considered the top but he’s doing it this season. He has improved a lot.”
Calvert-Lewin looks relaxed and is enjoying his football, while Pickford can still be a bit jumpy at times, which spreads nervousness.
He will hope 2021 can be a better year, and that he’s the man between the sticks when the European Championship kicks off in June.
