FORMER Rangers star Kevin Muscat could be in line for a shock role in Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff at Celtic, according to reports.

The Scotsman claims that the former Ibrox star – who spent a season at the club under Alex McLeish in 2002-03 – is in the shake-up for a position in the new regime at Parkhead.

They also claim that former Yokohama F. Marinos assistant Arthur Papas is a possible Parkhead recruit under Postecoglou, although he has also been linked with a move to spearhead A-league side Newcastle Jets.

Combative Australian international Muscat worked with Postecoglou at South Melbourne and Melbourne Victory, before replacing him as boss of the latter.

He won two Championships, a Premiership and an FFA Cup during his time at the Melbourne Victory, before making the move to Europe.

And he is also perfectly placed to guide Postecoglou through the process he is embarked on here as the Aussie Pro Licence holder bids to get the green light from Uefa.

  • We told you yesterday how Muscat initially joined Belgian outfit St Truiden as technical director in January last year.

But he is available now, as is Papas, Postecoglou’s assistant for two years at Yokahama.

Papas recently left his latest job with Kagoshima United, ostensibly with a view to taking over at Newcastle Jets.

But if the offer is made to join Postecoglou at Celtic, it could be an appealing on.

There are conflicting reports as to whether Postecoglou’s current assistants in Yokohama, Shaun Ontong and John Hutchinson, would be making the trip to Glasgow.

It also remains unclear if there will be a role for John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan, Neil Lennon’s backroom team.
