The post-Coach K era for the United States men’s basketball team is not off to a good start.

Team USA, which is now led by San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, lost its first game at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. The Americans were upset by France on Sunday morning, 83-76. Team USA entered Sunday morning’s game as a 12.5-point favorite.

Popovich’s team is having a rough summer. The Americans, led by Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard, lost multiple exhibition games leading up to the Olympics. Now, Team USA has lost when it really matters.

Team USA seemed like a lock to win gold earlier this summer. Now, it appears that the Americans will need to really come together to even contend for a medal.

American basketball fans are wishing Coach K was still around. The Duke men’s basketball coach led Team USA to three consecutive gold medals at the Olympics from 2008 to 2016.

Popovich’s coaching style with Team USA is rightfully being questioned right now.

Popovich is now 6-3 in major tournaments with Team USA.

There’s still a lot of basketball left in the Olympics, but the American men will need to figure things out quickly.

Team USA returns to the floor on July 28 against Iran. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 12:40 p.m. E.T.
