Full time: Everton 4-2 Brighton

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeep! It’s all over at Goodison Park, where Everton maintain their 100 per cent record and go top of the Premier League.Their seventh consecutive win in all competitions makes this their best start to a season since 1894, according to BT Sport commentator Ian Darke.

James Rodriguez bagged a brace, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina scored wonderful headers for the home side. Neal Maupay’s first half goal, in which the striker capitalised on a Jordan Pickford blunder, was rather eclipsed by a late, late screamer from Yves Bissouma.

11.52am EDT 11:52

GOAL! Everton 4-2 Brighton (Bissouma 90+2 min)

Wow! Yves Bissouma finishes with an absolute screamer from outside the box, chesting down the ball before sending an unstoppable volley past Jordan Pickford.

11.50am EDT 11:50

89 min: Mina gets in the way AGAIN! Doucoure lost the ball a few yards outside his own penalty area and Trossard pounced. He advanced into the area and sidefooted the ball to Maupay, who looked a certainty to score until big Yerry dived in to intercept. Outstanding defending.

11.48am EDT 11:48

88 min: Brighton win a throw-in, deep in Everton territory and take it very quickly. Everton win the ball back and embark on another counter-attack with Theo Walcott on the ball. He has a stop put to his gallop and Brighton win it back.

11.46am EDT 11:46

86 min: Mina gets his body in the way again, this time deflecting a low Trossard drive from distance out for a corner, from which nothing comes.

Updated at 11.46am EDT

11.45am EDT 11:45

83 min: Yerry Mina, who has been excellent, albeit only the second best COlombian on the pitch today, is on hand to dive in and cut out a Solly March ball across the face of goal that’s fizzing towards Neal Maupay. Good work down the left from Adam Lallana in the build-up, there.

11.42am EDT 11:42

82 min: A diagonal cross into the box from Bissouma beats Yerry Mina, but Lewis Dunk is unable to make contact with the ball despite flinging himself at it. Brighton substitution: Pascal Gross is on for Steven Alzate.

11.40am EDT 11:40

79 min: Everton substitution: James Rodriguez walks off after an outstanding performance and is replaced by Theo Walcott. If there was a crowd at Goodison Park this season, they would have given the Colombian a thoroughly deserved standing ovation. You have to feel for Everton fans, whose delight at the excellent early season form of their team must be tempered by the fact they can’t go to watch them play in the flesh.

11.37am EDT 11:37

78 min: Almost certain to win their seventh consecutive game, it’s worth noting that Everton’s next Premier League game is a Merseyside derby against Liverpool. They’ll surf into that one on a wave of confidence.

11.36am EDT 11:36

75 min: Good tracking back by Iwobi, who is on hand deep in his own penalty area to cut out a cross from Ben White.

11.34am EDT 11:34

74 min: Adam Webster takes advantage of a James Rodriguez slip to try a shot from the left side of the Everton defender. his effort is deflected out for a corner off Jerry Mina.

11.31am EDT 11:31

GOAL! Everton 4-1 Brighton (Rodriguez 70)

Everton extend their lead with a lightning fast counter-attack. It’s similar to their third, with Alex Iwobi cutting in from the left to play the ball to Doucoure on the edge of the six yard box. He plays the ball wide to Rodriguez, who scores his second of the afternoon into a gaping net from an almost identical position from where he scored his first.

11.29am EDT 11:29

69 min: Brighton may be 3-1 down but they haven’t let their heads drop. They’re continuing to press for a second goal but lose the ball in transition and Everton score their fourth.

11.27am EDT 11:27

67 min: Solly March leathers the ball across the face of goal and Jordan Pickford can only punch the ball straight to Neal Maupay near the penalty spot. As the Brighton striker shapes to shoot, Michael Keane relieves him of possession, sparing more blushes for his goalkeeper.

11.25am EDT 11:25

65 min: Lewis Dunk is penalised for a foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, moments before Aaron Connolly is withdrawn by Graham Potter and replaced by Adam Lallana.

11.23am EDT 11:23

62 min: Nothing comes from the corner, which Brighton elect not to send into the mixer despite Pickford’s poor handling in this torrential rain. Graham Potter’s men are not only poor at defending set pieces, they’re not particularly good at taking them either. They’ve already wasted several free-kicks, choosing not to play the ball into the penalty area when the opportunity was open to them.

11.20am EDT 11:20

60 min: Jordan Pickford looks less than convincing once again as he misjudges the flight of the ball as it’s crossed from the right touchline. From under the cross-bar, Yerry Mina somehow manages to put the ball over the goal and out for a corner before being clattered by his own goalkeeper.

11.19am EDT 11:19

59 min: Solly March jinks his way past three Everton defenders before pulling the ball back from the byline. There’s nobody on hand to fire home.

11.16am EDT 11:16

56 min: Adam Webster fouls James Rodriguez, who takes the opportunity to have a rest on the sodden grass. Nearby, Seamus Coleman is also sitting on the ground and looks to have done his hamstring a mischief following a sprint with Aaron Connolly.

11.14am EDT 11:14

54 min: The camera cuts to a very forlorn looking Leandro Trossard, who knows he’s messed up. His wayward pass was punished with extreme prejudice by an Everton side who are looking set fair to win their seventh successive game in all competitions this season. Who are you, Carlo Ancelotti? And what have you done to the flaky, soft-centred Everton we’ve long been accustomed to?

11.12am EDT 11:12

GOAL! Everton 3-1 Brighton (Rodriguez 52)

Everton extend their lead. A dreadful pass outside his own penalty area from Leandro Trossard is picked up by Calvert-Lewin and played wide to Iwobi. He sends the ball across the face of goal and James Rodriguez has the simple task of slotting home his first goal at Goodison Park.

Updated at 11.36am EDT

11.09am EDT 11:09

49 min: Everton go on the attack after playing the ball out from the back and win a throw-in on the edge of the final third. The ball’s played in to Calvert-Lewin with his back to goal and he attempts to spin away from Lewis Dunk, but succeeds only in sending the ball wide with a poor touch.

11.06am EDT 11:06

47 min: James Rodriguez picks up a pass in the Brighton penalty and tries to steer the ball past Mat Ryan. Adam Webster does well to block.

11.05am EDT 11:05

Second half: Everton 2-1 Brighton

46 min: Everton’s players are first out and have a brief wait as Brighton’s players make their way back on to the pitch from their temporary shelter located out in the Goodison Park car-park. Alex Iwobi gets the ball rolling. One change in personnel for Brighton: Tariq Lamptey is off and has been replaced by Joel Veltman.

11.01am EDT 11:01

Match report: Norwich City 0-1 Derby County

Championship: Wayne Rooney scored with a late free-kick to win all three points for County after Teemu Pukki had missed a spot-kick in somewhat comical fashion for Norwich City.

10.50am EDT 10:50

Half-time: Everton 2-1 Brighton

Everton lead by the odd goal of three at the break, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina scoring towering headers either side of Neal Maupay’s scrambled goal for the visitors.

10.48am EDT 10:48

GOAL! Everton 2-1 Brighton (Mina 45+2)

Oh Brighton. Everton win a free-kick wide on the right, just outside the Brighton penalty area. James Rodriguez whips in a cross and his compatriot Yerry Mina leaps between Adam Webster and Yves Bissouma to direct a powerful header past Mat Ryan.

Updated at 10.59am EDT

10.46am EDT 10:46

45 min: The fourth official signals two minutes of added time as an entertaining first half draws to a close.

10.45am EDT 10:45

43 min: Jordan Pickford looks disgusted with himself following his latest error and so he should – it was a bad one. Trossard swivelled to volley Lamptey’s cross at the far post but succeeded only in firing the ball into the ground. As it bounced upwards, Pickford made a pig’s ear of what should have been a straightforward catch and could only parry the ball in front of him, where Maupay was waiting to devour any scraps that came his way.

10.42am EDT 10:42

GOAL! Everton 1-1 Brighton (Maupay 41)

Dire defending from Everton. Lamptey crosses into the penalty area from the right and Pickford fails to catch Trossard’s volley as it bounces up from the ground. Neal Maupay is on hand to scramble the ball home between Keane’s legs in the wake of Pickford’s poor handling.

Updated at 10.50am EDT

10.40am EDT 10:40

39 min: Rodriguez plays a delightful ball down the line for Lucas Digne to chase. The ball’s crossed into the penalty area and Brighton clear.

10.39am EDT 10:39

37 min: Aaron Connolly flicks narrowly wide with the outside of his right boot after getting in behind the Everton defence to get on the end of a March cross from the left. Offside. That’s the nearest Brighton have come to a goal so far. They’re a decent side, but pretty toothless up front.

10.38am EDT 10:38

36 min: The rain continues to bucket down on Merseyside, where Tariq Lamptey is having a frustrating afternoon. The right-back has been outstanding for his side so far this season but has been well shackled by Everton’s defence. Any time the ball comes his way, he’s immediately surrounded by two or three men in blue shirts.

10.36am EDT 10:36

34 min: Aaron Connollly is holding his chest following some manner of off-the-ball tussle with Yerry Mina. The Var officials take a look at it but don’t make an issue of it.

10.33am EDT 10:33

32 min: A high cross-field pass from Michael Keane to Calvert-Lewin isn’t quite cut out and the striker gets on the ball on the right flank. He picks out James, who tries his luck from distance. He balloons the ball high and wide.

10.31am EDT 10:31

31 min: Coleman, James Rodriguez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin combine to good effect down the right flank for Everton, until Ben White steps in and dispossesses the goalscorer.

10.30am EDT 10:30

29 min: Digne gallops forward towards the left flank and plays a give-and-go to Iwobi. The return pass is intercepted and a reasonably promising attack breaks down.

10.29am EDT 10:29

27 min: Lucas Digne commits an identical foul on Yves Bissouma to the one Steven Alzate got booked for perpetrating against Seamus Coleman earlier. No card is forthcoming, although Brighton do get a free-kick. Altogether now: “All we want is consistency, ref!”
