Everton transfer news: Harry Winks wanted, but Lampard baulks at Tottenham fee as Plan B devised

Winks #Winks

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks is a transfer target for Everton, who reportedly want at least four new faces in this summer.

The Toffees are looking to avoid another dismal relegation battle like last season that put the club’s future in doubt. The rot set in under Rafael Benitez and current boss Frank Lampard also looked devoid of ideas at one stage.

However, he inspired a response from his players and Everton secured their survival in the penultimate Premier League matchday.

Everton subsequently want new signings in, with the belief that the only way is up after several years of hardship.

According to The Telegraph, Lampard wants at least one new midfielder, with Winks on his transfer shortlist.

Indeed, the Spurs man looks the most realistic target for the Toffees at this stage. Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher is also on the list, but the Blues plan to offer him a first-team chance in pre-season after his impressive Crystal Palace loan.

That would make advancing interest in the 22-year-old impossible until late on in the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, Lampard has eyes on Billy Gilmour, who similarly left Chelsea on loan last term. However, the Scot struggled at Norwich as the Canaries faced Premier League relegation.

As such, Winks looks the most achievable target for Everton as it stands. Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has made clear that the 10-cap England man can leave following the January arrival of Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus.

However, Everton would prefer to sign Winks on loan. Tottenham value the midfielder at £20million and the Toffees’ delicate financial situation means they could struggle.

The Telegraph therefore notes that Everton must become ‘creative’ in their business to add to their squad.

The newspaper adds that the Toffees will look to confirm the arrival of centre-back James Tarkowski from Burnley on a free transfer.

Striker additions could also be required, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s future uncertain.

Tottenham star needs move away

Winks’ best spell in a Tottenham shirt came under Mauricio Pochettino, who in fact promoted him to the first team.

He played a similarly key role in the early stages of Conte’s tenure. The midfielder played in 11 of the Italian’s first 15 Premier League matches in charge.

However, as Bentancur got up to speed, Winks only played 65 minutes in six appearances out of the final 13 league games of the season.

And with his contract expiring in 2024, a decision from Tottenham over his future is due soon, regardless of any interest.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is unlikely to budge from his £20million valuation. However, if Winks goes to Everton and impresses, he may not get the same fee as he enters the final year of his deal.
