Euro 2022: Ian Wright has brilliant response to ‘laughable’ Alan Sugar claim

Ian Wright has hit back at Lord Alan Sugar after he doubled down on a misinformed tweet he posted over the weekend about Euro 2022.

The business magnate complained about the apparent lack of male representation on the commentary panel but presenter Gabby Logan immediately shut down his incorrect claim.

Even after Wright appeared as a pundit during England’s historic 8-0 win over Norway, Sugar still had something to moan about.

The initial tweet read: “I am watching the women’s football and notice that ALL the commentators are women. I also note when men’s football is on there is a symbolic female commentator to cover the broadcasters a*se.”

Sugar then asked whether he should put in a complaint and seems to believe his post is the reason the latest BBC coverage featured a male pundit.

Wright appeared alongside Alex Scott and Jonas Eidevall in the studio, while Fara Williams took pitch-side duty with John Arne Riise.

Sugar was delighted to see the Arsenal icon on air and took the time to pat himself on the back for apparently making it happen.

“I was pleased to see my old mate Ian Wright was given the opportunity to commentate on the ladies game last night,” the 75-year-old wrote. “I wonder if my earlier tweet below touched a nerve. Of course BBC sport will say not at all, Ian was already lined up for it.”

Sugar’s tweet has reached Wright and he has responded with a brilliant two-minute long video response.

“Alan, the thing is, my friend, rather than just saying ‘I got it wrong, lots of men are working at all levels of the tournament’ you doubled down on some complete f***ing foolishness.

“Never mind the fact that we were ready to do this for a year — I’ve been booked for a year — you genuinely think that they [the BBC] called me up and said ‘Ian, you’ve got to get back from Germany ASAP. Alan Sugar has tweeted, we can’t upset him, we need to get you on.’

“You genuinely believe that that happened?

“Because that says to me that my God, your ego is totally out of control. Where’s the people around you to hug you bro? You need some hugs man. You’re coming on Twitter for attention like this, it’s laughable!”

Wright then closed the video by sarcastically thanking Sugar for his tweet and played on the idea that he is only working at Euro 2022 because of it.

He described the Lionesses match as “one of the greatest England games that has ever been played” before laughing and sincerely stating he is glad Sugar is watching the women’s tournament, for whatever reason that may be.

“I’m glad you’re watching and the only thing that you can find fault with doesn’t even exist.”

Before Euro 2022 kicked off, the commentary panel was revealed, announcing Wright and Eidevall alongside many other men who are involved in the broadcasting of the tournament.

Wright helped deliver punditry for the history-making England result on Monday. The 8-0 scoreline broke the record for the highest scoring men’s or women’s Euros match.

Beth Mead scored a hat-trick, while an Ellen White brace and goals from Georgia Stanway, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo rounded off the special evening.
