Euro 2020: Daniel James has plenty to give for Wales ahead of Switzerland match

Daniel James will be looking to start Wales’ Euro 2020 campaign with a win but face a strong Switzerland side who are equally confident.

Rob Page’s side are 16/5 with Grosvenor Sport while Switzerland are 11/10 and a draw is 41/20.

Wales won their last meeting back in 2011 during the qualifying stage for Euro 2012 winning 2-0 with goals from Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey.

However, the Swiss have the upper-hand in head-to-head, winning five of their seven meetings and are the favourites ahead of today’s match too.

Page did not have the best of preparations ahead of the competition losing to France 3-0 and going down to 10-man after Neco Williams saw red for handball before drawing 0-0 with Albania.

The only consolation is that goalkeeper Danny Ward looks quality facing penalties as he denied Karim Benzema.

Tips

  • Gareth Bale to score anytime – 5/2
  • Both teams to score – 5/4

Now James goes into the Welsh camp as a squad player used around once every games thanks to a number of injuries, fitness issues and Mason Greenwood pipping ahead of him.

His experience in the dressing at Manchester United will be good which can compliment the big names in the squad such as Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale. They will need strong characters to go progress through and a repeat of Euro 2016 maybe a bit of a stretch, they will surprise a few again I feel.

On the pitch, however, James compliments Page’s counter-attacking tactics and will be likely deployed on the left-wing as he did against France with Bale on the right.

A counter-attack featuring these two will be clinical so I am expecting James to set up Bale here with the Real Madrid player on the scoresheet at 5/2 anytime.

It seems Page prefers to play either a 4-3-3 or a 3-5-2 – both formations James suits very well in. His experience at Swansea City under Graham Potter allows the winger to slot into different systems without any complaints – which will make him a great asset during the summer.
