“A significant number of forced generation outages combined with potential record electric use for the month of June has resulted in tight grid conditions,” a press release says. “We will be conducting a thorough analysis with generation owners to determine why so many units are out of service,” said ERCOT Vice President of Grid Planning and Operations, Woody Rickerson. “This is unusual for this early in the summer season.”

CPS Energy echoing the warning to San Antonians by asking customer to reduce electricity uses as possible  during the peak hours of 2 p.m.  to  7 p.m.

“All of our local plants are up and running, and virtually all of them are at full capacity. Our 300,000 customers participating in our Demand Response programs will be called on to reduce their use. We’re asking our other customers to help even further by conserving energy to support the grid,” said Rudy Garza, Chief Customer & Stakeholder Engagement Officer for CPS Energy.

Here some ways Texans can conserve energy:

  • Set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher – every degree of cooling increases your energy use by six to eight percent.
  • Close shades and blinds on windows exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Turn off lights and pool pumps and avoid using large appliances like ovens, washing machines, and dryers
  • If you don’t need something, turn it off and unplug it if possible.
  • Use fans to feel 4 to 6 degrees cooler, but turn them off in empty rooms.
