England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan on Tuesday broke the record for the most sixes in international cricket as a captain. Morgan hit his 212th six in international cricket in the 3rd ODI against Ireland in Southampton.

Eoin Morgan went past MS Dhoni’s tally of 211 sixes which was the record until Tuesday. Morgan needed only 163 matches to get past Dhoni’s tally. The former India captain had taken 332 international matches for 211 sixes.

Ricky Ponting is at the 3rd spot on the list of captains with most international sixes — 171 in 324 matches. Brendon McCullum is at the 4th spot (170 from 121 matches) ahead of AB de Villiers (135 from 124 matches).

West Indies great Chris Gayle holds the record for most sixes in international career. Pakistan’s former captain Shahid Afridi is second on the list with 476 sixes while MS Dhoni is 5th with 359 sixes. Eoin Morgan is not far behind as he is 8th with 324 sixes (as of August 3, 2020).

MS Dhoni stepped down as Test captain as early as 2014 while he handed over the reins in limited-overs to Virat Kohli in 2017. While he has not played international cricket since India’s exit from the 2019 World Cup, Dhoni is gearing up for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, scheduled to be held from September 19 to November 10 in the UAE.

Morgan was in full flow on Tuesday in the 3rd and final ODI of the series as England are looking to complete a 3-0 sweep of Ireland. After Ireland opted to bowl, England lost openers Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy early and James Vince failed again but Morgan counter-attack and put the pressure right back on Ireland.

Eoin Morgan completed his fifty in just 39 balls and carried on with his six-hitting spree. England sealed an unbeatable 2-0 lead after winning the first 2 ODIs in Southmapton last week.
