Gareth Southgate has revealed that he kept James Maddison’s inclusion in his 26-man England World Cup squad a closely-guarded secret for two weeks.
Maddison had been braced for bad news, but received a personal call from England manager Southgate on Thursday to inform him he was part of his squad to travel to Qatar.
Southgate’s only other calls to players who had made his squad were to Manchester City pair Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips, who have been carrying injuries.
“I spoke to James on Thursday morning,” said Southgate. “I decided a couple of weeks ago I would pick him, but I obviously didn’t tell him then. He was delighted and it was very different to some of the other calls I had to make to players who didn’t make it.
“The only calls I made were to the two guys who have had injuries and James. The others were to the players I left out.”
Southgate also dismissed the theory that Maddison had been left out of previous England squads as a result of being pictured in a Casino in 2019, having complained of being too unwell to play for his country.
Maddison’s one and only England cap came in 2019 and Southgate said: “That (the casino) was unfortunate because it became a bigger issue for James than it was for me. For me, that wasn’t the drama it seemed to be for everyone else.
“He has always been up against really good players in his area of the pitch, but James has played really, really well and he has earned the right to go to the World Cup. We think he can give us something different to our other attacking players we have got.”
Explaining his gamble on the fitness of Walker, who has not played since early October, and Phillips, who returned from injury as a substitute for Manchester City on Wednesday night, Southgate said: “Kalvin played last night and is now free of injury.
“We are aware he will not be able to play seven 90 minutes, that’s not possible and we will have to build his fitness. But he is free of injury and I don’t have a lot of cover for that role in the country.
“Kyle is a bit different. He is not back in full training, but he will be available before the end of the group stage.”
© Provided by The Telegraph England squad announcement – GETTY IMAGES
Asked why he did not take a similar gamble on Reece James, Southgate added: “He would not be available until the latter part of the tournament if everything is perfect. I couldn’t take a player who would not be available for the group stages, that would be deemed arrogant.”
Other than Maddison, Walker and Phillips, Southgate handed World Cup spots to Callum Wilson, Ben White, Marcus Rashford and Conor Gallagher.
Tammy Abraham, James Ward-Prowse, Ivan Toney, Fikayo Tomori, Marc Guehi and Jarrod Bowen all missed out.
“Tammy has had a poor run of scoring form at the wrong time,” said Southgate. “The World Cup is 10 days away so form could be more important.
“We have picked more experienced defenders. The younger ones have good qualities but not enough to push the older ones out.”
Justifying his decision to pick Harry Maguire, who has been injured and out of form, Southgate said: “He is one of our best centre-backs. A lot of players in our squad have been to tournaments and know what is required.”
04:01 PM Southgate’s change of heart over Maddison is no gamble – Sam Wallace
Gareth Southgate is a quietly stubborn man – no bad thing for a manager – but it seems that experience has taught that there are occasions when you simply have to change your mind about a footballer.
James Maddison would not have been a consideration for Southgate this time last year when England were 18 games into an unbeaten 22 game run. He had not been in contention for Euro 2020 earlier that year, Southgate said today. By the time that unbeaten run crashed in the summer with two defeats to Hungary, two further draws in the Nations League and just one goal in those four games, Maddison was getting closer.
Come the autumn, the inclusion of Maddison was “a fair debate”, Southgate said, although he once again decided against it.
When England laboured again, against Italy and then the first half against Germany, it meant that Southgate was in the mood to challenge the beliefs that he once held. “He’s earned the right”, Southgate said today and the reality is that Maddison’s form and fitness has peaked at the perfect time to make the World Cup squad for Qatar this month.

03:57 PM England midfielder Kalvin Phillips reacts 03:52 PM Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers on Maddison
He was delighted, he had a missed call from Gareth just before we were ready to go out training and I told him to pop into my office and take the call privately. He obviously spoke to Gareth and he came out full of the joy of the world.
It’s private what James said, it was just happiness as well because I am sure he had all sorts of thoughts going through his mind. Sometimes how it was painted it looked like it was swinging more against him, if you listened to stories. In fairness to Gareth he has been great, he looked at it with logic and saw a player that can really help the squad.
He called to stabilise James because there were stories overnight that sounded like he wasn’t going to make it. So really good management with Gareth to stabilise it. It is wonderful news for James and his family and everyone here at Leicester. I am also delighted for Gareth as well from a coaching perspective to have that talent available in what is such a great tournament.
His level of consistency and the work ethic and the talent and what he has proven over the last few years has swung that decision. He is a fantastic player and one of the best players in the Premier League. I am really delighted for him and also his team-mates because without them he wouldn’t have been able to play at the level he has.

We understand the challenges that this tournament brings within that. If it wasn’t for the strength of that community, we wouldn’t be women’s European champions, so it is very important to us.
02:42 PM Southgate hails Gallagher’s attributes
He is fantastic at pressing the ball. I think there are going to be moments at games where we are going to have to use different attributes. We feel he can be that sort of player. He isn’t experienced but he is a goal threat. Can score and create.

Kalvin won’t be able to play seven 90-minute [matches]. We have to build his fitness. We haven’t got much cover in that area… we feel it’s a risk worth taking.
On James:
There were too many unknowns. I don’t think we can take a player who’s not available for the group. That would be deemed arrogant in some circles… and you’d be dropping him into a quarter-final.

02:09 PM Southgate springs Maddison’s surprise
By Matt Law
James Maddison has been named in England’s 26-man World cup squad by manager Gareth Southgate.
Maddison’s brilliant form for Leicester City has been rewarded by Southgate, who has also recalled Marcus Rashford and Callum Wilson and given places on the plane to Ben White, Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips.
The unlucky players to miss out are Fikayo Tomori, Marc Guehi, Ivan Toney, Tammy Abraham, Jarrod Bowen, James Ward-Prowse, Joe Gomez and Tyrone Mings.
Southgate’s selection of Maddison will be hugely popular among supporters and pundits who had urged the England manager to pick the 25-year-old.
The selections of Walker and Phillips may be seen as a gamble, given how long the Manchester City pair have been out with injuries. Reece James and Ben Chilwell miss out through injury.

01:43 PM Ben White IN after October omission
By Sam Dean
Ben White was a surprise omission from the most recent England squad but his fine form at table-topping Arsenal has earned him a recall in time for the World Cup, Telegraph Sport understands.
White has been one of the most impressive defenders in the Premier League this season, operating primarily as a right-back for Mikel Arteta’s side.
He provides Gareth Southgate with a versatile and athletic defensive option, capable of playing as a right-back, centre-back or even potentially as a defensive midfielder (although that seems unlikely).
The 25-year-old has four caps to his name and will expect to add to that tally in Qatar, where he will be a strong contender to start on the right of Southgate’s back three.
01:34 PM When squad selection goes wrong
“Quickly a pattern began to form: the ones who came back to the pool were in; the ones who didn’t make it were told to pack and go home, just leave, no chance for goodbyes. It was like a scene from the Apprentice.”
You can read Jim White’s interview with Graeme Le Saux here, who was at La Manga when Glenn Hoddle told Paul Gascoigne he would not be going to France ’98 and his hotel suite suffered the consequences.
01:30 PM Matt Law’s view on that one remaining place:
By a process of elimination it would seem the remaining place in Southgate’s 26-man squad must be one of Conor Gallagher, Tyrone Mings or Ruben-Loftus Cheek.
01:23 PM Eric Dier IN
By Matt Law
As expected, Eric Dier told he is in the squad. No place for his Tottenham team-mate Ryan Sessegon despite shortage at left-back.
01:19 PM Room for one mystery player?
By Matt Law
Given what we already know, there still appears to be one space up for grabs. This is a list of 25 names of players who we now know for sure are in the squad or look nailed on through other absences.
That leaves a space for either another defender or one more midfielder…
Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford (Everton) Nick Pope (Newcastle), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal).
Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Conor Coady (on loan at Everton from Wolves), Eric Dier (Tottenham), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Manchester City) Ben White (Arsenal).
Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City), Declan Rice (West Ham), James Maddison (Leicester City), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool).
Forwards: Marcus Rashford (Man United), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Tottenham), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Chelsea), Callum Wilson (Newcastle).

By John Percy
James Maddison is set to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup.
Southgate has been under heavy pressure to select the Leicester City playmaker and it is understood that Maddison will be jetting out to Qatar.
Maddison is in excellent form for Leicester this season, scoring six goals and contributing four assists, yet there were doubts over whether he would be picked for England.
However, Southgate is now expected to include the attacking midfielder in what will still represent a late surprise.
Maddison has one cap at international level and has made no secret of his desire to feature at this year’s World Cup.
01:07 PM Breaking news: James Maddison IN squad 01:02 PM Wilson fulfils a dream with England call up
By Luke Edwards
Callum Wilson will fulfill a boyhood dream inspired by a stunning free kick from David Beckham after he was named in England’s World Cup squad.
Wilson has scored six goals in ten appearances and is the best all round striker in the country behind Harry Kane according to most pundits. More importantly, he is fit, playing in seven consecutive games for his club.
“It’s been a case of working hard to get back to the level where Southgate thinks I am good enough to contribute to the squad.” said Wilson in an interview with Telegraph Sport earlier this week. “I think I’ve done that and for once the timing is perfect with such a big tournament coming up.
“The type of character I am, I’m always trying to achieve bigger goals. When you find yourself, unfortunately, out of the squad – often for factors out of your control – I’m not one who assumes I’m good enough to be in there or deserve to be in there.
“I wasn’t doing enough on the pitch when I first arrived at Newcastle. And then there have been the injuries…they have been unfortunate, especially timing wise. It’s been a frustrating three years, lots of up and downs.”
You can read our exclusive interview with Wilson in full here.
And look out for part two of Luke’s interview on Telegraph Sport tommorow.
12:56 PM The competition Wilson has beaten…
The Newcastle striker’s call-up appears to have come at the expense of Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham, but there could still be space for Marcus Rashford who can play as a centre-forward or from the left.
Wilson’s role is likely to be back-up for Harry Kane, but he will be a fine option from the bench should England need a goal.
12:49 PM Confirmation that Kyle Walker is in 12:47 PM Breaking news: Callum Wilson IN squad
That comes from our Northern Football Writer Luke Edwards, who will have more on Wilson’s call-up shortly. A reward for his strong form with Newcastle United, who currently sit third in the Premier League.
12:36 PM Matt Law’s assessment of where we stand with around 90 minutes until the announcement
We now know that Fikayo Tomori, Marc Guehi, Tammy Abraham, Ivan Toney, Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse have been told they will not be part of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man England squad.
That appears to be good news for Kyle Walker, Ben White, Callum Wilson, Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips. It also leaves the door open for a surprise.
Could that be James Maddison who had feared he would receive bad news? Or could Conor Gallagher or Ruben Loftus-Cheek be given a place.
It might be that a surprise defender is included, although it is thought Joe Gomez will miss out.
12:30 PM No James Ward-Prowse in squad
By Matt Law
James Ward-Prowse will not be part of Southgate’s 26-man England squad. Hard on him after missing out on the Euros too.
12:16 PM What is Southgate planning at centre-back?
No Marc Guehi or Fikayo Tomori, and there are reports that things are not looking good for Joe Gomez.
Could there be room for a surprise recall for Chris Smalling or Tyrone Mings? The Aston Villa man is a left-footed option, and England do not have many of those at the back.
If we assume Southgate plans to use a back three, then the way I see it is Kyle Walker and Ben White competing at right centre-back, Eric Dier deputising for John Stones as the central cog, and then who knows on the left? Maguire, Mings or even Luke Shaw?
Personally, I think Dier and Conor Coady duplicate each other’s strengths and weaknesses, but Southgate does like Coady’s off-pitch qualities.

By Matt Law
Still no confirmation of whether or not James Maddison has made the 26-man squad.
The midfielder had feared the worst, but the omissions of Tomori and Guehi, and the space that frees up might just have the Leicester City star dreaming again as he waits for Gareth Southgate’s call.
Tammy Abraham has also been left out which could be good news for Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson.
Abraham scored for the first time since September for Roma on Wednesday night, but it was not enough to convince Southgate to take him to Qatar.
10:56 AM Who is in my squad I hear you ask…
Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, Nick Pope.
Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Ben White, Eric Dier, Luke Shaw, Kyle Walker.
Midfielders: Declan Rice, Mason Mount, Jordan Henderson, Jude Bellingham, Kalvin Phillips, James Maddison.
Forwards: Bukayo Saka, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, Ivan Toney, Callum Wilson.
You’ll note I have only selected 25 players. I don’t think Southgate needs 26, the usual 23 is enough. And based on current for, I believe those are the best players available!
10:33 AM BREAKING: Tomori & Guehi not in England squad
By Matt Law
Gareth Southgate has told Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi they will not be part of his 26-man England World Cup squad.
The pair’s omission looks like good news for Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, who is expected to be in, and Arsenal’s Ben White.
It could also open up a spot for a potential surprise with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez having been watched by the England set-up and midfielder Conor Gallagher also liked by Southgate and his coaches.
Tomori and Guehi had been expected to be battling out for one place in Southgate’s squad, but the England manager has told both players they will not be travelling to Qatar.

England will win the World Cup after beating Brazil in the final, according to a modelling system that proved right in the last two tournaments.
A collective insurable value of players helped underwriter Lloyd’s reach its conclusion that the 56-year-wait to reclaim the trophy is finally over.
In total, tournament players have an estimated insurable value of almost £22bn, an increase of nearly £9bn since 2018, the research found. Using the same model that correctly identified Germany as winners in 2014 and France in 2018, England came top of a ranking of metrics which includes wages, sponsorships, age and on-field position.
With an estimated insurable value of £3.17bn, England edge out France (£2.66bn) and Brazil (£2.56bn) to claim the top spot. “By way of overall comparison, the average insurable value of one England or France player is more than the entire Costa Rica squad,” Lloyd’s said.
Using this methodology, the model sees England finish top of Group B, before securing knock-out wins against Senegal, France, Spain and Brazil.
England’s Jude Bellingham is rated the most insurable player at the Fifa World Cup, followed by France’s Kylian Mbappé and Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior. Players aged between 18-24 have an average insurable value of £32m compared to £12m for players over 31.

08:38 AM England World Cup squad announcement
Today is the day!
This afternoon England manager Gareth Southgate will announce the 26-man squad he is taking to the winter World Cup in Qatar. England begin their tournament against Iran on November 21, before facing the United States on Nov 25 and Wales in their final Group B match on Nov 29.
There are a number of selection decisions still up for debate and a few players sweating over their place on the plane. Leicester’s James Maddison is one of the form players in English football but is far from certain to be travelling.
“He might have a Louis Vuitton bag, but he loves football. He made some mistakes that he would admit as well,” Maddison’s club manager Brendan Rodgers said.
“He’s had one cap, so he’s already of a mindset and an anticipation like he has been when he hasn’t been in squads. We’ve spoken a lot about it, and if it’s not to be for him, he’ll have some time with his family and then he’ll push even harder when we return. Naturally he would be disappointed. For James, I don’t have any doubt whatsoever that he will consistently play at that level.”
Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has made a late run and could win a place in attack alongside Harry Kane Kane with Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Roma’s Tammy Abraham also in contention.
On Wednesday, Reece James confirmed he will not be going to the World Cup after failing to recover from a knee injury.
“Devastated,” the defender said on Twitter. “The minute I injured my knee, I knew the turn around to make the World Cup would be tight, but I always felt it was possible. I’ve worked harder than I ever thought I could to give myself the best chance of going and truly believed I could help the team. I appreciate there was risk on both sides but it was one I was willing to take. Good luck to the boys. I’ll be back soon. Stay safe and sending love.”
FIFA’s deadline for final confirmation of the squad is Monday which means Southgate will be hoping the players he has chosen do not pick up any injuries in the final round of league matches before the tournament.
