England Lucy Bronze was spotted in a furious exchange after giving the ball away that led to Spain’s opening goal in the Women’s World Cup final. The Lionesses and Spain were locked in a tense first half with both sides threatening to break the deadlock early on.
Lauren Hemp hit the woodwork for England while Mary Earps was needed on a number of occasions to deny Spain. With the midfield too crowded, it was up to the wide players to try and make something happen in the match.
Bronze regularly makes lung-busting runs from her right-back role up the pitch and she embarked on another one midway through the half. After skipping past a few challenges, Bronze pleaded with Ella Toone to run into space for her to play the ball down the left flank.
But England’s right-back was eventually crowded out and lost the ball in the middle of the pitch, leaving the Lionesses exposed. Spain quickly countered while Bronze was seen throwing a tantrum in the centre circle, throwing her arms in the air in frustration.
But Bronze was guilty of not rushing back to her position with Spain overloading England on their right side. In contrast, Spain’s left-back Olga Carmona bust a gut to overlap before having the ball played into her path inside the box before she let fly a brilliant shot across Earps into the bottom corner.
Bronze was not even close to England’s own box when the ball hit the back of the net and she immediately collaped to the floor in frustration.
