England player ratings as Jonny Bairstow scores 0/10 in historic defeat to India

RAJKOT — England’s Bazballers were on the receiving end of a hammering of historic proportions as they were skittled for 122 in just 39.4 overs on the fourth day of the third Test.

This 434-run defeat was England’s heaviest in a Test match in terms of runs since the Second World War. Indeed, only once have they lost by more runs – 526 – and that was in a timeless Test against Australia in 1934.

The surrender came after England’s bowlers were flayed to all parts during a miserable first 47 overs of the day in which India scored 234 for the loss of two wickets.

An electric unbeaten 214 from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who resumed his innings on 104 after retiring hurt the previous evening, was the catalyst for a declaration that set England a gargantuan target.

By the end of England’s torture in the field, India’s fifth-wicket pair of Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan had put on an unbeaten 172 in 158 balls.

Here’s how every England player rated out of 10:

Ben Duckett 7/10

His first-innings 153 from 151 balls was one of the great England overseas centuries. Less said of his second-innings run out the better.

Zak Crawley 2/10

Made 26 runs in the match and was overshadowed by Duckett – not to mention Yashesvi Jaiswal – as he produced his worst performance of the series.

Ollie Pope 3/10

That 196 in Hyderabad seems like a long time ago now. Innings of 39 and three were not enough for the man who holds the pivotal No3 position.

Joe Root 1/10

Drop of Rohit Sharma that cost 104 runs and reverse ramp that sparked first-innings collapse were the two big moments of this match. Averaging 12.83 this series.

Jonny Bairstow 0/10

Twice trapped lbw to spin as he was out for a duck and four. Faced seven balls all match and is averaging 17 in the series.

Ben Stokes 3/10

Looked the most passive and defensive in the field during his time as captain. Was unable to save his team with the bat either.

Ben Foakes 5/10

Wicketkeeping was stunning as ever, he didn’t miss a beat behind the stumps. But needs runs with the bat.

Rehan Ahmed 3/10

Figures of three for 193 across both innings don’t look great and despite admirable effort, his inexperience was exposed here.

Tom Hartley 3/10

England’s most economical bowler but largely devoid of threat after a decent opening spell as he took two wickets from 63 overs.

Mark Wood 5/10

Brilliant first-innings effort, with four wickets and a fine run out. Used sparingly in the second as India ran away with the match.

James Anderson 2/10

Did his mind wander towards retirement as he was carted to all parts on the final day? A Test he’ll want to forget.
