Former England international Karen Carney was left scrambling for words on ITV after the Lionesses’ devastating World Cup final defeat. Spain came out on top in Sydney, with Olga Carmona’s fine strike securing a 1-0 win and their first major international trophy.
England were gunning for another international triumph under manager Sarina Wiegman, having been crowned champions of Europe last summer. Battling performances against Nigeria, Colombia and Australia booked their spot in Sunday’s final, although Spain showed their class to notch a deserved victory.
Carmona’s first-half strike proved to be the difference, as a half-time change of tactics by Wiegman failed to turn the tide. A heroic penalty save by England’s Mary Earps preserved the contest late on, but La Roja held on to spark jubilant celebrations at the full-time whistle.
Shortly afterwards, Carney was asked for her reaction to the result. “I’m struggling for words,” she told ITV while attempting to hold back tears.
“That group there, I thought we had it. We were so confident going into the game, but it only took one brilliant moment to decide the game for Spain.
“I’m struggling. I’m gutted because the players gave everything on the pitch but Spain were exceptional tonight. We were just beaten by the better team. We just weren’t quite there today.”
“I’m so bitterly disappointed for England but Spain were the better team on the night,” she told the BBC. “I’m absolutely devastated for Mary Earps.
“She was outstanding in this tournament and kept England in the game. The belief was there after the Earps’ penalty save but in the end we didn’t create enough chances.”
