Fans were left baffled ahead of England’s game against Italy on Thursday night after a bizarre rendition of the national anthem.

As Gareth Southgate’s side lined up to sing ‘God Save The King’ at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, the main singer produced a strange rendition of the anthem that was out of sync with the ground’s PA system – leaving viewers at home confused.

Thursday night’s game was televised live on Channel 4, with viewers based in the UK also watching on All 4. The peculiar effort has been described as “embarrassing”, “disgraceful” and the “worst ever” rendition of ‘God Save The King’ by fans on social media.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara, who won seven England U21 caps during his playing days, was one of many to question the bizarre rendition on social media. The talkSPORT pundit tweeted, “Wow national anthem was a shambles.”
