Endeavour’s Shaun Evans on why show had to endITV

Endeavour returned last night (February) for its ninth series, which was confirmed by ITV last year to be its final run.

While it may be sad for fans of the Inspector Morse prequel, lead actor Shaun Evans thinks that it’s actually the right time to wrap things up.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, the star said that: “It’s come to its right end, it really has. The people are now a part of my life and always will be, but the story itself is told. I can’t explain it better than that.

“So it doesn’t feel like, ‘Oh, God, we should have gone back and done this,’ or ‘Oh, I feel nostalgic for that.’ I really don’t feel any of that. I feel like we’ve done that and it’s reached its natural conclusion. And I’m pleased with it.

“It’s funny. To be honest, I don’t feel sad, I honestly don’t. I just feel really grateful, to be honest with you, really grateful. And it’s not about me, but [I feel] grateful and privileged… to have had the opportunity to tell it. And I feel pleased. I know pride goes before a fall, but I feel pleased with the work that we’ve done.

“I think we all felt – well, I can’t speak for everyone else – but the sense on set at least was, it was the right time for all of us to call it a day.”

Evans added that there were “so many aspects of Endeavour I will miss” but overall felt that he was so grateful for the experience that he didn’t really have “room for missing things, or nostalgia for things”, adding that the cast are still constantly speaking and will always be in his life.

“But that part of the story is told, and… I honestly do feel just feel good about it,” he concluded. “It’s funny, I expected to feel different… but no, thankfully. Which is good, you know?”

Endeavour airs Sunday nights on ITV and streams on ITVX.
