Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins responds to Charity baby fan theory

Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins has shot down a fan theory concerning her character Charity Dingle and Charity’s ex, Mackenzie Boyd.

Despite the lives of Mack, Charity and Chloe Harris being at risk in next week’s car crash drama, many of the soap’s fans believe a baby could be on the way for the ex-love birds.

Asked by Digital Spy and other media if the Emmerdale bosses have prepared her for a plot twist like this, Atkins replied: “I haven’t heard anything and that would be news to me.

“I can’t even remember how many children I have in the show at the moment! I go: ‘Is it three? Is it four? Is it five?’ That’s terrible! But no, I don’t think so.”

Touching on the love triangle that is Charity, Mack and Chloe, the actress went on to share: “People just want Mack to make his mind up: ‘Will you please just pick a woman!'”

Chloe and Mack actors Jessie Elland and Lawrence Robb also weighed in on the fan reaction, with Elland saying: “I think any form of fan reaction is a great thing to have, because it shows that they’re invested and enjoying it, even if that enjoyment is not liking a particular situation.”

Atkins added: “I think the humanistic quality of it all is played out really well because everyone had a reason to be devastated by the circumstances but Mack had not gone out of his way to cause this. It wasn’t a salacious story, there was a reason behind it.”

Robb then suggested that there’s been a “50/50 split” right down the middle of the fanbase regarding Mackenzie’s dilemma, revealing: “Any time any fans have spoken to me it’s been: ‘Why are you not with Charity?’ Or: ‘I’m glad you’re not with Charity and you went with Chloe’. It’s always been opposite ends of the spectrum.”

The Glaswegian actor also made sure to praise the Emmerdale writing team for its handling of each character’s plight.

“It’s done in a really nice way where you can empathise with all of the characters and all of their motives for why they’ve done what they’ve done,” said Robb.

“You might not agree with it but you can understand why they’ve done what they’ve done.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
