Remember that one kid at school who literally just could not deal with losing at it, polo or football? Well yeah, pretty sure that was Elon Musk back in the day, as the Twitter boss has just massively backtracked on the promise he made yesterday and has switched up the rules of the game. Hmm… we’re not impressed, hunni!

To recap: social media users thought Elon Musk’s reign at Twitter might be coming to an end much soon than we all expected. Following backlash to his takeover – which saw a mass exodus of celebrities and some major hiccups to his paid-for verification scheme – the billionaire business mogul asked Twitter users if they think he should step down as boss… and pledged to do so if they vote that he should.

In a poll to his 122 million followers, he tweeted: “Should I step down as head… I will abide by the results.” And when it came to crunch time? Over half of users (57.5%) who responded to the poll told the space-loving billionaire to step down.

In a follow up tweet, the Space X and Tesla founder wrote: “As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it.”

In response to the poll, many Twitter users speculated as to what would happen next, with one person suggesting Musk “already has the new CEO picked out” and that he will “retire to being Chairman of the Board” – but to that, Musk himself replied, “No one wants the job who can actually keep Twitter alive. There is no successor.”

Now, serving up classic rich man vibes, Elon has said rules on Twitter now dictate that only people who pay for a Twitter Blue subscription (which affords them a ‘verified’ blue tick on the platform) can vote on company policy. So, reckon he’ll be running another poll about the future of his career in a couple of days? Watch this space…
