  • Elon Musk visited the US-Mexico border on Thursday.

  • But his livestream on X was marred by technical problems.

  • He reportedly sent an abrupt company-wide email: “Please fix this.”

  • Elon Musk’s US-Mexico border visit on Thursday was struck by technical difficulties as the X owner livestreamed on his platform.

The world’s richest person announced earlier in the week that he would be visiting Eagle Pass in Texas to “see what’s going on for myself.”

That came after he shared videos of migrants crossing the border and questioned why there was “almost no legacy media coverage of this.” Reuters, The New York Times, and CNN are among the several outlets that have published reports on Eagle Pass.

The town’s mayor said it was seeing 2,500 migrants crossing the border every day, which is overwhelming Eagle Pass’s lone shelter provider, per the NYT.

But Musk’s attempt to “engage in citizen journalism” was tempered by X’s technical problems. He began the livestream by saying: “Let’s just make sure this thing’s working first.”

He discussed immigration for about four minutes before the stream hit a snag and froze. “Let’s see if this is still working,” he said. “I was a bit worried so many people might go on it that it crashes.” The livestream had about 5 million viewers.

According to NYT reporter Ryan Mac, Musk then sent an abrupt email to everyone at X: “Please fix this.”

Later on, Musk restarted the livestream for another 13 minutes, where it appeared to run a bit more smoothly.

X’s livestreaming functions came under the spotlight as Musk hosted Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign launch in May. The glitches left Musk furious after his own app repeatedly crashed.

X did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
