Elliott fires Liverpool past Wolves and into Emirates FA Cup fourth round

Harvey Elliott’s wonder strike saw Liverpool past Wolves and into the Fourth Round of the Emirates FA Cup. 

The Young Lions star struck on eight minutes to ensure Jurgen Klopp’s side safe passage into the next round, where they will face Brighton & Hove Albion. 

It was a morale-boosting win for the Reds who were beaten 3-0 by the Seagulls last time out in the Premier League.

Wolves started brightly having played their part in an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Third Round tie at Anfield.

But the Reds struck their crucial blow on 13 minutes, Elliott driving into space and uncorking a dipping drive that was far too good for Jose Sa. 

Wolves grew into the contest, with Julen Lopetegui’s substitutes injecting much-needed momentum. 

Ruben Neves forced a first save from Caoimhin Kelleher – and a fine one to deny a free-kick bound for the corner – and Raul Jimenez cursed a deflection for diverting his header.

Matheus Cunha had two late chances but there was no way through for Lopetegui’s side as the eight-time winners advanced.

There would be no FA Cup fairytales for League One Forest Green Rovers and National League Chesterfield.

Rovers started to dream of an upset against Birmingham City when Ben Stevenson’s superb strike gave them the lead, a side-footed effort that flew into the top corner from just outside the box on eight minutes. 

The hosts dominated the first half but John Eustace switched the Blues to a back four at the break and that seemed to make all the difference.

Lukas Jutkiewicz stroked home to level just after the restart and centre-back Kevin Long poked home from a 65th-minute corner to complete the turnaround.

Paul Cook’s Spireites endured a tough night against West Bromwich Albion having held the Championship side to a 3-3 draw in the initial tie.

The visitors were punished for sloppy passing at the back when John Swift gathered a sliced clearance and curled a sumptuous left-footed shot into the far corner from 18 yards.

The second goal was a similar story as the Baggies pounced on the ball deep in Chesterfield territory and Tomas Rogic duly made it two.

Jake Livermore ghosting in for a third on 54 minutes and Jovan Malcolm scored his first senior goal with a header in second-half injury time.

Elijah Adebayo’s last-gasp winner saw Luton Town to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Kolo Toure’s Wigan Athletic. 

Thelo Aasgaard thrashed home from the edge of the area to put the Latics ahead moments after half-time, only for Cauley Woodrow to cancel it out four minutes later. 

Adebayo swept into the bottom corner seven minutes into second-half injury time to put the Hatters into the fourth round, where they will face Grimsby Town.
