Eid ul-Fitr, the festival of purity, joy, peace and brotherhood is celebrated at the end of holy month of fasting known as Ramadan. The day of Eid is not fixed and is decided only after the sighting of the new moon on the last day of Ramadan. After a long month of fasting, Muslims across the world rejoice on this pious occasion. In India, Eid is on Sat, 23 May, 2020 – Sun, 24 May, 2020. Prophet Muhammad commemorated Ramadan as per the Islamic calendar and so it falls in the ninth month and Eid is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal in the tenth month. It is believed that fasting during Ramadan will bring people close to Allah and will absolve them of their past sins if they fast with absolute faith.

The month of Ramadan isn’t just about abstaining from food and drinks but also from evil actions and thoughts. It is about fostering unity, brotherhood and being more considerate towards the downtrodden. Every Muslim is expected to pay Zakt-al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan to the impoverished. This mandatory act of charity or welfare can be in the form of food items like wheat, dates, barley etc. or in the form of cash. On the day of Eid, prayers are performed in open areas under the blue sky or inside mosques. Eidi or small gifts are given to children on this day for them to celebrate it with utmost joy. Prayers of eternal peace and harmony is offered by the Muslim community.

On the occasion of Eid, Muslims wear new clothes, offer morning prayers, and revel with their friends and family. They exchange presents and gorge on all sorts of delectable food like sheer khurma and seviyan. The date for the beginning of any lunar Hijri is usually based on the sighting of the new moon and that varies in different parts of the world. And so in some countries, Eid will fall on May 23th and according to the Islamic calendar, holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so a few people will celebrate it on May 24th.
