Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakrid, is the ‘festival of Qurbani’ or the feast of sacrifice. It is one of the most important festivals for Muslims around the world. This pious festival is celebrated in the month of Zul Hijjah of the Islamic calendar every year. This year, the festival will begin on July 9 evening and end on July 10.To celebrate this festival, people of the Islamic community sacrifice an animal to mark their devotion to Almighty Allah. After the sacrifice has been made, the offering is distributed among family, friends and all people in need.Eid-Al-Adha significanceThe festival of Bakrid is celebrated to honour Ibrahim who was willing to sacrifice even his son Ismael to prove his dedication and devotion to Allah. Ibrahim realised that this was the command of God and told the same to his son Ismael, who was also a devotee of God. Ismael agreed to sacrifice himself so that his father could follow the wishes of God.

According to the ancient texts, just when Ibrahim was going to sacrifice Ismael, Allah sent Angel Gabriel (Jibreel) with a sheep to be slaughtered, saving the life of Ibrahim’s son. This led to the celebration of Eid ul-Adha.
