The festival of Eid ul Fitr is celebrated with great pomp and show. It is commemorated on the opening day of the Shawwal month and Muslims across the world pray to Allah. They honour their god by offering sweets and chanting prayers. They pray to Allah to give them a strong healthy body and mind and help them in resisting the urge to eat during the month-long fasting time that is known as Ramzan or Ramadan. This year, Eid ul Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, May 14 in India. This occasion is very significant for Muslims as they celebrate this time with great celebration. This time signifies the end of Ramadan which is the Islamic sacred month of fasting. This is observed by Muslims all across the world. Eid al-Fitr is also known as the ‘festival of breaking fast.’ The date of Eid ul Fitr is decided after the crescent moon is sighted. On this lovely occasion of Eid ul Fitr, people wear new clothes, prepare delicacies and do charity. They also gift others clothes, sweets and other items as a mark of love and unity. Many also visit their family and friends for festivities.

  • History and why is Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated? It is widely believed that Prophet Muhammad first sighted the Holy Quran during the holy month of Ramzan. And so, Eid al-Fitr signifies the end of fasting from dawn to dusk throughout Ramadan. It is also the opening of the Shawwal month. The occasion of Eid ul Fitr is also commemorated to pay tribute to Allah for offering and blessing people with strength and courage during the month-long fasting customs.
  • How is Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated? It is believed that one good action is repaid by 10 times. The month-long fasting season of Ramadan is a sign of perseverance, patience and determination. Those who complete it are said to have harmony, prosperity, good health and peace in their and their loved ones’ lives. Those who dedicate themselves get the most success. Muslims observe this occasion by praying just after sunrise. Everyone wears new clothes, greets each other ‘Eid Mubarak’ and exchanges sweets. Many people also give each other gifts. Children have a great time with their friends. There is also a lavish and grand lunch and dinner. There are lots of delicacies like haleem, kebabs, biryani, nihari and desserts like seviyan. It is truly a glorious time.
  • Why do the dates of Eid change every year on the Gregorian calendar?Muslims tend to follow a lunar calendar instead of a Gregorian calendar. The latter is mostly followed by the people in the West. And so, the starting dates of all the months of the Islamic lunar calendar are marked by the sighting of the crescent moon. The Islamic calendar is lunar-based and this means, Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr occur approximately 10-11 days earlier. This depends on when the crescent moon has been sighted, every year. This is because the lunar months are shorter than the solar months. This varies from country to country by about a day. If people are able to see the crescent moon, ‘chaand raat’ is marked in the evening after the last Ramadan fast. There is lots of happiness around if people are able to sight a chaand raat, especially when the festival of Ramadan is about to end.During the time of Chaand raat, families and friends gather on an open area like their home’s terrace, parks etc. so that they can view the crescent moon at end of the last day of Ramadan. Chaand raat marks the onset of the Islamic month of Shawwal and the day of Eid-ul-Fitr the next day. However, if the crescent moon cannot be seen, Muslims continue to fast on the next day and then on the next day, they celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.
