Eid al-Fitr 2019: US Ambassador sends his ‘warmest greetings’
Eid al Adha begins today, July 19, and spans four days, ending on Friday, July 23. Also known as the Festival of the Sacrifice, Eid Al Adha is the second of two Eid festivals celebrated in Islam. The first is Eid al Fitr, which follows Ramadan and celebrates breaking the fast.
Eid al Adha is a far more sombre festival, honouring Ibrahim’s willingness to follow God’s command and sacrifice his son Ishmael.
God commanded Ibrahim to take his son and sacrifice him, as a show of faith and obedience.
As written in the Quran Ibrahim said: “Oh son, I keep dreaming that I am slaughtering you”.
To which Ishmael replied: “Father, do what you are ordered to do.”

Instead of Ibrahim sacrificing his son, Angel Gabriel put a lamb in Ishmael’s place and said: “O’ Abraham, you have fulfilled the revelations.”
Today, Eid al Adha is celebrated with prayers, the sacrifice of an animal and sharing of the meat.
An animal like a lamb is slaughtered and the meat is divided three ways, for family, for relatives and friends, and for poor people.
Prayers are said, blessings shared and time spent with family members.
