‘Eff you’: How WhatsApp message and Ed Langdon’s sledge sparked more Magpie madness

Collingwood used Ed Langdon’s “one-trick pony” criticism as inspiration for its thrilling win over Melbourne, with Jack Crisp revealing the team’s reaction was “eff you”.

Speaking ahead of the Friday night match Demons wingman Langdon, discussing the Magpies’ tactics, said on SEN: “They’re sort of all duck, no dinner in a sense. If they’re playing fast footy on their terms they’re a very hard team to stop.

“They’re a bit of a one-trick pony at times, so hopefully we can dampen the way they want to play and off the back of that go out and offensively play the way we want to play.”

The idiom ‘all duck, no dinner’ basically means ‘all or nothing’ – not quite like ‘all bark, no bite’ as many appear to have taken it – but either way the quote quickly made its way to the Magpies.

Jack Crisp revealed to Foxfooty.com.au Brayden Maynard sent the quote into the team WhatsApp group chat on Thursday, and it was then used by coach Craig McRae in the pre-game team talk.

“Everyone heard it yesterday. Bruzzy put it in our team WhatsApp group, they always have a few jokes in there. Fly (McRae) had it up pre-game on the board as well,” Crisp said.

“There’s a lot of different aspects to our game, I don’t know what the one trick is, but we just keep finding ways to win in different ways. It’s great to see everyone on the same page.”

Asked whether it fired him up, Crisp replied: “A little bit. Everyone’s a little bit different. Everyone saw it yesterday and was like oh well, eff you, we’ll show you.

“We’ve gotta get pumped up, the coach does a good job pumping us up plus other aspects that he had on the board. We know what we play, we know what we bring, we know what our best footy looks like.”

He added, in an apparent piece of advice for Langdon: “I’m not a sledger, I just go about my business, but to me I wouldn’t go too early in case you lose and then, ‘oh shit’.”

Maynard showed the footy world the Magpies meant business in the opening seconds of the win when he and several teammates laid a heavy gang tackle on Langdon.

Speaking on Fox Footy post-game, Maynard said: “We did use it as a bit of source to look back on.

“I think Ed Langdon sometimes speaks in the media and he doesn’t realise what he’s actually saying.

“When I got that first tackle on him I let him know about it.”
