Susanna Reid and Edwina Currie clashed with one another on Monday’s Good Morning Britain as they spoke about Matt Hancock’s recent resignation.

Pressure had been mounting on the embattled minister after he was filmed kissing government aide and millionaire lobbyist Gina Coladangelo at the Department of Health’s London HQ.

The Tory cabinet member finally admitted he had no choice but to resign, having first tried to cling on to his job after footage emerged of him kissing Coladangelo in a blatant breach of Covid rules.

Susanna and her co-host Martin Lewis were keen to get 74-year-old Edwina’s thoughts on the matter as she supported Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision not to sack Matt Hancock.

“He had no choice in the end about resigning. Now he’s a backbencher, he’s toast,” Edwina began.

“My own feeling is that it’s awful when ministers are hounded out of office. I think the Prime Minister did the right thing by saying to him, ‘you’ve apologised, let’s move on’. Although that wasn’t enough in the end.

“Also, we’ve got to judge ministers I think, not by these kind of saintly standards, I mean I’m not Joan of Arc, I was a minister, I was a very ordinary person and ordinary people, human beings, have failings. What we have to judge them on is results,” she added.

Susanna then said: “Can I just ask you… you said, ‘we shouldn’t hold them to saintly standards because they’re human beings’.

“The government is asking us all to adhere to saintly standards, I mean the government has intruded onto our private lives, private property and private relationships over the course of the pandemic and the lockdown.

“And the one thing we want to know from the government is that they’re sticking to the same rules, so he wasn’t hounded out of office, he literally broke the rules that his name is on,” Susanna added.

Edwina sarcastically replied: “And Susanna you don’t have to say it so slowly for all us of who understand…”

But Susanna was having none of it and hit back: “Well, I’ll ask the question in my own way Edwina Currie and you can answer it in your own way.”

Martin was see grinning as he interjected: “If you want someone to talk quickly, I’ll do it for you, but we’ll get the question either way!”

Susanna then added: “Perhaps we need to say it slowly to government ministers and those who support the government, because these rules are for sticking to, that’s what we constantly get told!”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
