Edouard Mendy made his first Chelsea appearance of 2023 in this weekend’s home game against Nottingham Forest and it not begin well.
Kepa Arrizabalaga had started each of Chelsea’s last 25 matches since the World Cup but interim boss Frank Lampard benched the Spanish keeper in favor of Senegalese stopper Mendy on Saturday.
Mendy looked rusty in the 13th minute when he came off his line for a Renan Lodi cross but got nowhere near the ball.
Taiwo Awoniyi got his head to the ball to score his eighth goal of the season, giving Forest a 1-0 lead at Stamford Bridge.

Analyzing the goal for BBC Sport, former England women’s defender Anita Asante said: “It’s shocking.
“Mendy has to get there if he’s decided to come for that ball.
“Awoniyi is powerful and has risen high to attack that ball but Mendy has to do better.”
