Edinson Cavani once again proved his class for Manchester United with a trademark impeccable finish as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side drew 3-3 with Everton on Saturday night and Liverpool may well be realising where they went wrong at the start of the season. When it became clear that Paris Saint-Germain weren’t going to renew Cavani’s contract last year, it was originally thought that a host of teams would be lining up to sign him.

Despite his age, the Uruguayan has proven to be an example for how to look after yourself in the latter stages of your career.

While the pace is not what it once was, Cavani’s redefined his game over the years to maintain an ability to keep performing at the top level.

So when Cavani was still without a club towards the end of the summer transfer window it was a mystery to some, but United’s move to sign him raised even more eyebrows.

The Red Devils had spent the summer teasing a big-money move for Jadon Sancho only to decide the England international was out of their price range.

Their interest in Sancho though stuck to the transfer model that United had tried to maintain in looking to sign young, up-and-coming talent.

The move for Cavani was the complete opposite and seen as something the club might have done during Louis van Gaal or Jose Mourinho’s tenure.

Fast forward four months though and it’s arguably been the best piece of business by a club in the summer transfer window.

The game against Everton was only his seventh league start of the season, but Cavani has already racked up six goals.

And Liverpool may well be kicking themselves that they didn’t follow a similar route in going against their usual transfer strategy to bring Cavani in.

Jurgen Klopp has had to call upon Divock Origi once again in recent weeks but, while the Belgian forward holds iconic status on the red side of Merseyside for some famous goals over the years, he’s been unproductive and ineffective for the defending champions.

The Liverpool boss’ formula of sticking with players up front who are able to interchange has taken them to new heights over the past two years.

But teams have proven again and again that they need world class options at every corner as well as players with a winning mentality.

That’s exactly what Cavani brings and what United have ultimately benefited from this season.

Add Cavani into Liverpool’s squad and he may not be playing as regularly as he currently is at United.

But he does somewhat fit the mould of an archetypal player Klopp usually loves as being the ultimate professional and he would have only added to their options up front.

Instead, Liverpool can only watch on as Cavani continues to impress at Old Trafford with United sitting above them in the table.
