An old chum is coming back to the cabaret.
Eddie Redmayne, who won an Olivier Award for his performance as the Emcee in the London production of “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” will reprise the role when the show comes to Broadway in April.
“It was whilst playing ‘The Emcee’ in a student production of ‘Cabaret’ over 25 years ago that my love for theater was properly ignited,” Oscar and Tony Award winner Redmayne, 41, said in a statement, adding that “it now feels completely thrilling and a little surreal” to be part of the new production.
Producers also announced Gayle Rankin will play Sally Bowles in the John Kander-Fred Ebb musical that begins previews April 1 at the August Wilson Theatre. A twin opening night is planned for April 20 (gala) and 21 (official press opening).
Director Rebecca Frecknall’s production will be performed in the round with the theater transformed into the Kit Kat Club of late-1920s Berlin.
The London version of the show, which opened in December 2021, won seven Olivier Awards — the British equivalent of the Tony — including best musical revival.
